Proposals Invited for 2010 Missouri History Speakers’ Bureau
The Society seeks proposals for talks on state and local history topics from academic and independent scholars.
We are looking for presentations based on extensive research in primary source materials such as unpublished diaries, letters, and period newspapers rather than secondary materials.
At this time, we are not looking for theatrical-style presentations, for example, first-person impersonations or reader’s theatre.
Proposals and applications must be submitted by July 15, 2009.
Complete the application form and provide the following by mail or e-mail:
- A 500-word proposal including:
- the title of the presentation;
- a summary of the presentation;
- length of presentation (hh:mm) and note if the length can be adapted to the needs of the requesting organization;
- the general nature of the sources used to create the presentation;
- the applicant’s experience in speaking to adult audiences.
- A one-page curriculum vitae or résumé.
- A photograph to be used on the Speakers' Bureau Web site and/or for promotional purposes. This is not required, but speaker profiles with photos generally draw more requests.
Criteria for selection as a Speakers’ Bureau member include:
- originality of the proposed topic, which should appeal to a general audience;
- the variety and quality of the sources used to develop the talk;
- and the ability of the presenter to engage a variety of adult audiences.
Scholars chosen to be included in the Speakers’ Bureau must be willing to:
- present at least two 20-50 minute presentations during the calendar year 2009;
- travel up to 100 miles from home;
- provide information to audiences about The State Historical Society of Missouri and the Western Historical Manuscript Collection; and
- become an annual member of The State Historical Society of Missouri.
Applicants chosen to be included in the Speakers’ Bureau will receive a $200 honorarium for each presentation delivered, plus travel reimbursement up to $100.
The deadline for proposals is July 15, 2009, and applicants will be notified about the status of their applications by August 15, 2009.
