Historic Missourian Biographies

The State Historical Society’s Historic Missourians website has entire categories devoted to explorers and settlers and travelers in Missouri. Each biography includes images, primary resources, and other references for further study.

Manuscripts

The State Historical Society of Missouri's manuscript collections include letters, diaries, and memoirs describing geography, culture, and historical figures pertaining to domestic and foreign travel. The Society's collections include the George E. McPherson Jr. Papers, the Susan Warren Papers, and the Mary Margaret Cairns Papers.

For more information on the geography, location, and routes of travel see the State Historical Society of Missouri’s map collection and digital map collection. The collection contains maps dating to the early 1700s. The maps deal primarily with the development and changing boundaries of Missouri and the Louisiana Purchase.
