Founded in 1841 as Union, Savannah was renamed in June of that year as a courtesy to Georgia-born Samuel Crowley, a member of the first county court, who loved his native city. From 1860 until approximately 1867, Savannah served as the northern terminus of the Platte County Railroad and became a major distribution point and trade center for the surrounding territory.
