Chosen as the county seat in 1825, Fulton was named for Robert Fulton, the first person to propel a boat through water using steam. The photo above may depict one of the agricultural auctions regularly held on the courthouse square the first Monday of every month. Started in 1872, the auction celebrated its highest grossing day in 1910, when $1.5 million worth of livestock was sold.
