Thomas C. Fletcher, future governor of Missouri, laid out the town of De Soto in 1857. The opening of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad in 1858 led to the town's rapid growth. The railroad company later established and maintained its main locomotive repair shops there.
