Talk: “Remembering Columbia”
January 12, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Daniel Boone Regional Library, Columbia

Do you remember “Jelly Dates” and Jane Froman? This talk and slideshow will focus on life in Columbia during the 1930s-1950s as seen through the photographs, letters, and oral histories held by the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia. Presented by William T. Stolz, senior manuscript specialist and head of reference services for WHMC-Columbia. Cosponsored by the Daniel Boone Regional Library Foundation.

Exhibit Opening: Selected Photos of Missouri by Oliver Schuchard
January 24, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

This exhibit of photographs by internationally known photographer Oliver Schuchard features large-format color and black-and-white images of the Missouri landscape. The artist will be present to sign copies of his book, The Landscape in Black and White, recently published by the University of Missouri Press. Schuchard, of Holts Summit, Missouri, is professor emeritus at the University of Missouri-Columbia Art Department.

Talk: “Craft, Concept, and Bias: Avoiding Ordinary Photographs”
February 9 at 7:00 p.m.

Despite effectively photographing the landscape of many regions of the United States, photographer Oliver Schuchard’s intimate ties to his home state of Missouri have been crucial in the development of his personal aesthetic. In this slide lecture, Schuchard will consider the balance of technical, aesthetic, and philosophical considerations required in the making of a photograph that takes it beyond the ordinary.

Workshop: “Using the Internet and African American Research in Missouri”
February 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Traci Wilson-Kleekamp of Columbia will offer an overview of the tools and resources available via the Internet to conduct genealogical research for African Americans and will demonstrate various research strategies to explore while conducting research on enslaved ancestors. This workshop is limited to thirty participants, and pre-registration is required. Call (573) 882-7083. The workshop is free for Society members and $10 for nonmembers.

Genealogical Conference

Morning Workshop: “Beginning Genealogical Research,” 10:00 a.m.

Timothy D. Dollens will present the morning workshop, “Beginning Genealogical Research.” Dollens is supervisor of the Southern Boone County Public Library in Ashland, a branch of the Daniel Boone Regional Library. He is in charge of genealogy programming and assists with programming for the main library in Columbia. Dollens has presented programs for many central Missouri genealogical organizations as well as area service clubs and serves on the Missouri State Genealogical Association (MoSGA) Board as second vice president.

Afternoon Workshop: “Using the Internet for Genealogical Research,” 1:00 p.m.

Pamela Boyer Porter will present the afternoon workshop, “Using the Internet for Genealogical Research.” Porter is an author, researcher, lecturer, and teacher specializing in southeast Missouri, methodology, migration paths into and out of Missouri, and effective use of computer tools for genealogists. She is co-author of Online Roots: How to Discover Your Family’s History and Heritage with the Power of the Internet and Research in Missouri.

The workshops are free for Society members and $10 per workshop or $15 for both for nonmembers. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, contact the Society at (573) 882-7083.

Representatives from Missouri genealogical societies will be on-hand to offer information about their organizations, and the Society will also be open for research.
