This index to selected Missouri newspapers was compiled over a number of years by State Historical Society of Missouri. Using this index, researchers can find information about people and topics throughout Missouri as most newspapers published articles picked up from papers in other parts of the state and covered events that occurred outside their readership area.

The newspaper titles and dates included in the online index are:

  • Columbia Missouri Statesman, 1843-1886
  • Jackson Independent Patriot, 1820-1826
  • Jackson Missouri Herald, 1819-1820
  • Missouri Intelligencer, 1819-1835
  • St. Louis Missouri Argus, 1835-1840
  • St. Louis Missouri Gazette, 1808-1822
  • St. Louis Missouri Republican, 1822-1828

The newspapers are not available online. Researchers can request copies of articles by selecting Research Requests. Researchers may also visit the Newspaper Library or borrow microfilm through Interlibrary Loan.

Information found in the database includes:

Subject refers to the person, topic, or location indexed. When searching for a name, be aware that many first names were commonly abbreviated, e.g., Geo., Jno., Thos., and Wm. Newspapers also often referred to individuals by initials and a last name. Women are usually referred to by their married names, e.g., Mrs. Jno. Hendricks. The indexers indexed the names as they appeared in the newspaper, so researchers should try a variety of possibilities when searching. For example, James Rollins may appear as James, J. S., or Jas. Newspapers may also have spelled surnames in more than one way. Please try variants when searching.

Description provides a brief summary of the article or context in which the indexed entry appears. See and See Also notes in the field refer researchers to other indexed names or terms. See was often used even when information is present in the description field.

Title includes the name of the newspaper, the date, the page number, and the column number in which the indexed term appears.
