Thursday, January 24, 2008 Friends of Arrow Rock 1st Saturday Lecture SeriesArchaeologist Tim Baumann’s lecture on Soul Food February 2 is the first in a series of four 1st Saturday Lectures sponsored by the Friends of Arrow Rock and held at the Arrow Rock State Historic Site Visitor Center. Other topics will be:March 1: The Civil War in Saline County by historians James Denny and Michael Dickey April 5: In the Spirit of Yellow Eyes, A Cultural Legacy by artist, cultural interpreter and great-great- granddaughter of Yellow Eyes, Dorothy Eiken May 3: Bad Blood a 90-minute documentary on the Missouri Kansas Border War produced by KCPT-TV, Kansas City, followed by discussion with producers Angee Simmons, Pam Reichart and Emmy award winner Clayton Stubbs. All programs begin at 10:00 a.m. and are open free to the public. Thursday, January 10, 2008 Records and Recollections: Family History Day, 2008March 15, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.Workshop InformationWorkshop IThe Draper Manuscripts: Genealogical Gleanings - Seth Smith10:15 - 11:30 a.m. The Society’s microfilmed collection of important Lyman C. Draper Manuscripts offers rich opportunities to academics, regional and local scholars, and family historians. Society Reference Specialist Seth Smith will focus on genealogists’ use of letters, interviews, legal documents, family and personal records, land deeds, muster rolls, military discharges, and business records in the Draper Collection to aid family history research. The records primarily cover the period of 1750 to 1815 and hold a wealth of information about the “Trans-Allegheny West,” the region that was, for many years, the American frontier. Workshop IIWriting a Memoir - Winifred B. Horner1:30 - 2:45 p.m A distinguished author, lecturer, and MU professor, Win Horner will teach participants about the art of documenting personal experience in “Writing a Memoir.” For more than forty years Dr. Horner has taught composition, rhetoric, and authored widely used textbooks and programs, stating: “As writers, we must always begin with what we know best – our own experience of the world – and attempt through words to make that experience meaningful for others.” Schedule of Events
