"The Journey of Old Glory"

The White House Commission on Remembrance and USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum are sponsoring a nationwide flag raising effort. Old Glory will travel to 20 states with ceremonies at historic battle sites, national cemeteries and other historically significant sites including the Museum. George Washington's Near Debacle at the 1778 Battle of Monmouth Courthouse

Presenting: Col. Jack Brooks, a retired career Army officer who commanded a battalion during the Normandy Landing of WWII on June 6, 1944. George Washington's attempt to defeat the British forces under General Sir Henry Clinton as he withdraws his army from Philadelphia to New York City nearly ends in defeat for Washington.

Both sides claim victory in what was really a tactical draw. The legend of Molly Pitcher during the battle will be discussed as well as the court-martial of the American General Charles Lee for his part in the battle.  "Untold Stories and Diversity"

Since its 19th century beginnings on the banks of the Missouri River, Kansas City has been a bustling metropolis comprising many diverse cultural groups. The histories of these various peoples - Native Americans, Hispanics, enslaved persons of African descent, eastern Europeans, Jews, and today East Africans and Central Americans – have not been fully told by the majority of Kansas City history-based institutions.

 

This panel discussion assumes that a publicly-funded institution such as Kansas City Museum has an obligation to explore all these histories of the region. But we also presume that to do so, we need to broaden the base of authorship of such histories – these stories need to be told in the voices of those who lived them. "Untold Stories and Diversity" begins with such neglected histories of Kansas City's past that are not prominent in larger Kansas City culture. Joe Faus of the Latino Writers Collective will share personal and cultural histories of his re-location to KC from his Colombian home, subsequent "flight" to a suburban enclave, and his return to the urban core. The panel will examine such stories, ponder why they are not widely known and look for ways that an institution such as Kansas City Museum can embrace more diverse stories, by embracing diverse authors.

Congress recently created the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area, which covers 41 counties in Kansas and Missouri.  National Trust staff are participating in the historic preservation component of the General Management Plan (GMP). Civil War Battle Re-Enactment AND the Burning of Dayton

(Really, they're actually going to SET FIRE to the place!)

During the Civil War, Cass County, Missouri, was a haven for Southern sympathizers and guerrillas such as Quantrill. The town of Dayton became a target for U.S. troops, and the town and its vital bridge were burned to the ground. Dayton, Cass County, Missouri Civil War Re-enactors Association, and the 10th Missouri Infantry under Captain Joe Broski invite you for a weekend of education and entertainment. Saturday's battle will be generic. Sunday's battle will be the Lotspeich Farm fight (Quantrill's largest encampment of 250 men was forced to escape on to the Battle of the Ravines).  The culmination will be the ACTUAL DESTRUCTION BY FIRE of thirteen homes and a church. Truman Courthouse Open House and Behind the Scene's Tour

Peek in the nooks and crannies of the historic Harry Truman Courthouse on Independence Square and see just why the building, which has remnants dating back to 1836, is in need of remodeling. Current plans are to convert the defunct County Courthouse into a Visitors Center to welcome those who come to Jackson County to see Harry's hometown and all the sites associated with our area's most famous individual; to see where the major westward travelers outfitted and jumped off; to experience frontier justice at the Jackson County (Mo.) Historical Society's 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum; and all the other sites and shops and stops that Independence, Missouri, has to offer residents and tourists.
