Thursday, April 12, 2007 Living History Outdoor Civil War Classes at historic Jefferson BarracksExciting news! In 3 short weeks, on May 1st thru May 4th, 2007, [Tuesday through Friday], The Missouri Civil War Museum will be hosting its 4th annual Civil War Days Educational Outeach program with the Rockwood School District of St. Louis County. This year’s event is a four-day long outdoor living history classroom, that will involve all six Rockwood Middle Schools, with a record 2,000 8th grade students. There will be over 500 students on hand each of the four days, for this very exciting outdoor living history classroom. Although this particular event is closed this year to the general public, observers are welcomed, especially members of the history departments of the various local school districts, in anticipation of more districts being involved next year, on a grander scale, covering more historically significant aspects of the Civil War.This year is quite unique and very special for The Missouri Civil War Museum, because for the first time ever, with the blessing of the National Guard Commander of Jefferson Barracks, the event will be held on the historic grass military parade grounds directly in front of our future Civil War museum facility. This particular military parade ground holds great historic significance, as it has been used by the US government and military since the year 1826, and over 200 famous Civil War generals (including Grant, Sherman, Lee, etc.) have trained, drilled, marched and paraded on these very grounds! The Missouri Civil War Museum is new to Jefferson Barracks, and should not be confused with other museums and other Civil War entities that have previously been at Jefferson Barracks. We are excited about bringing new life to Jefferson Barracks! This year's educational outreach event will be divided into six different areas of interest .......... Cavalry, Artillery, Infantry/Camplife, Flag History, Jefferson Barracks History, and Medical/Hospitalization. Many of you are already aware of this planned event and will be taking part in it. We are however still in need of some additional participants and presenters along with some more tents, equipment & horses. Several Missouri Civil War units are expected to attend, but this event is open to units from other states, if interested This is NOT a re-enactment ...... more importantly, it's an outdoor living history classroom, specifically created for teaching our children about the Civil War, and more specifically about Missouri's involvement in the American Civil War. We are putting together the final name list of those who are planning to attend this exciting event. Please contact me as soon as possible, if interested, at 636-237-3398. Keep in mind, you do not have to commit to all four days. We need participants for each of the days, and so you can participate on only one day, or as many days as you want, or can. The event will be on a Tuesday, Wed, Thurs, & Friday. The actual educational part will take place from 9:30am to 1:15pm. We need all participants to be on the parade ground in front of our museum building by 8:30am on each of the days, and you may leave as early as 1:30pm. Lunch and beverages will be provided to each participant and an abundant amount of water and hay will be available for the horses. This year, the museum will also be offering a $25.00 bounty each day to each of the participants in the event, payable at the end of each day. The participant may take this bounty as their own compensation for participating, or the money can be made payable to his or her re-enactment unit or organization. On a personal note, we are expecting that the event will be highly publicized with numerous newspapers and television stations covering it due to its uniqueness and after being highly publicized. This event will not only help promote our museum project at JB but it will also help promote and put a spotlight on the rebirth of Jefferson Barracks as a premiere military historic site. As many of you know, many other military museums are being planned for the JB campus. If you can help out in this great event, please contact me prior to April 15th, 2007 so we can get you on the participant roster. If you do not have gear or period clothing or uniforms for the event, let me know because we do have many available that we can outfit you with. Also, many participants are camping inside the fenced parade grounds overnight, along with their horses and equipment. Security by the military MP's and our own people, as well as routine patrols by County Park Rangers and St. Louis County Police. Remember, there are only a few presenters at each of the classroom settings, so you do not have to be a “Civil War expert” to participate and help out. At this time, we actually need more collateral participants [visible bodies] than presenters. The primary objective is to create a large encampment atmosphere with numerous tents, equipment, horses, wagons, soldiers, ladies and children in period clothing. This will make the event more exciting for the students and will make a greater impact to the media that will be covering the event on television, etc. Once again, thank you all for your past support and if you can participate in this very important event we will most certainly appreciate it. We (you!) will be making scholastic history! Please forward this email on to any others in the Civil War community that may be interested in participating, but remind them that they must contact me and sign up for the event prior to April 15th. You can contact me at mtrout1963@msn.com or on my personal cell phone at 636-237-3398 during the day or evening, to sign up for the event, or if you have any questions. This is all so very exciting, and we look forward to seeing you all there! Respectfully, Mark L. Trout, Chairman The Missouri Civil War Museum At Historic Jefferson Barracks http://www.missouricivilwarmuseum.org My cell phone 636-237-3398 mtrout1963@msn.com PS As an added bonus, we are expecting 96-year old George Williams to be in attendance in uniform. Mr. Williams is in excellent health, and is the actual son of a Civil War soldier! Did you hear that?! And, as far as we know, he's the only living son of a Civil War soldier. So, we're very excited and honored to have Mr. Williams in attendance. Labels: Civil War, Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis County posted by The State Historical Society of Missouri @ 3:59 PM

Wednesday, April 11, 2007 Thomas Hart BentonNewton County HistoricalSociety receives authentic Thomas Hart Benton letters. The Newton County Historical Museum has received a donation of two original letters written by a young Thomas Hart Benton to his childhood chum John Robison of Neosho. Being neighbors, John and Tom were close friends and remained so until the Benton's moved to Washington D.C. The letters were penned and mailed from Washington by nine year old Tom in 1897 and 1898. Benton excitedly relays the sites of the capitol to Robison, at one point describing a silent picture show he had just seen as "being the best ever laid my eyes on". The donations were made by Bill Hux of Camarillo, CA and Stephen B Hux of St. Louis, MO, both grandsons of John Robison. The letters were re-discovered in 1958 by Robison while refinishing an old desk for his grandson Bill Hux. After Robison's death in 1974, in the letters came into possession of the Huxs and were recently offered to the museum. In conjunction with the Thomas Hart Benton Festival, the letters and their envelopes along with other Benton items will be on display during the month of April in the schoolhouse on the park grounds. The hours are from 12:30-4:30 every day of the week and weekend. For more information, please contact Charles Brown at 417 592 0165 or email cbrown@rs.com.
