March 19, 2007 “Use a Map with Care: Errors in Historic Missouri Maps”![]() On April 3 at 5:30 p.m., Walter Schroeder, associate professor emeritus at the University of Missouri-Columbia, will give a talk at the State Historical Society of Missouri titled “Use a Map with Care: Errors in Historic Missouri Maps.” The presentation will be free and open to the public.
Map users cannot assume that all maps are free from error! Join Schroeder as he discusses the major and minor mistakes that appear on some historic Missouri maps. To show where errors are likely to occur and how to identify them, Schroeder will use examples from the maps on display in The Stories They Tell: Understanding Missouri History through Maps. The Society is located on the ground floor, east side of Ellis Library on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. posted @ 12:13 PM March 15, 2007 Beginning GenealogyTuesday evenings, April 17 through May 15, 7:00-8:00 p.m. The Society will present a five-week course for the beginning genealogist. The classes are designed for those with no knowledge of how to begin genealogical research. Each class will build on the information from preceding presentations. Participants will learn how to keep records, where to look for information, and how to use the Internet for researching family history. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. posted @ 8:30 AM March 08, 2007 Society Patrons Can Now Request Obituary Research Assistance Online![]() The State Historical Society of Missouri has a new secure link on its Web page where patrons who wish to receive assistance in finding an obituary can make a request and pay with a credit card. The secure link is only for requesting copies of obituaries found in newspapers from Missouri held in the Society’s newspaper collection. To make a request, go to “Research Requests” and then “Obituaries.” The full name of the deceased, the exact date of death, and the residence at the time of death is required. The cost per request is $5.00 for Society members and $10.00 for nonmembers. The fee includes one photocopy of researched material and mailing costs. posted @ 4:02 PM March 01, 2007 “Pigment to Pixels: The Art of Notley Hawkins” On March 13 at 5:30 p.m., Notley Hawkins, a Columbia painter and photographer, will give a talk at the State Historical Society of Missouri titled “Pigment to Pixels: The Art of Notley Hawkins.” Join Hawkins as he discusses his transformation from a painter to a photographer and contrasts his older work with his current works of photography. The presentation will be free and open to the public.Hawkins graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia’s School of Fine Arts, where he studied with Frank Stack, noted Missouri painter. Hawkins took up digital photography three years ago. A collection of his work titled Light & Life in Missouri: Photos by Notley Hawkins is on display in the Society’s North-South Corridor Gallery through May 12. Featuring large-format color and black-and-white images, the exhibit documents life in mid-Missouri.
