January 23, 2007 Society Acquires Rare Bingham PaintingPaintings by George Caleb Bingham form the foundation of the art collection at the State Historical Society of Missouri. With the recent acquisition of The Thread of Life from the Spanierman Gallery in New York, the Society is at last able to augment its collection of Bingham genre paintings and portraits with a personal picture painted for the artist’s family. The Thread of Life was probably made for Bingham’s second wife, Eliza Thomas Bingham (it remained in the possession of her descendants in Kansas City until 1980). In 1917, art historian Fern Helen Rusk proposed that The Thread of Life commemorated the 1861 birth of James Rollins Bingham, the artist’s only child by Eliza. On February 6 at 5:30 p.m., Joan Stack, Society art curator, will give a talk titled “The Thread of Life: Rediscovering the Personal Side of George Caleb Bingham.” The presentation, to be held in the Society, will be free and open to the public. Stack will discuss how this work reflects aspects of Bingham’s personal life, from his rarely discussed religious beliefs to his struggles to have a child with his beloved second wife. The Society is located on the ground floor, east side of Ellis Library on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. The Art Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. posted @ 11:01 AM |
