The electronic project, titled “Famous Missourians,” is available on the Society’s Web site at www.umsystem.edu/shs/famousmissourians. It was written and designed by educational writer Carlynn Trout in conjunction with Society staff. The primary purpose of the project is to help fourth-grade students learn more about Missourians from various time periods who made important contributions in a variety of fields. This educational outreach project provides students with visually engaging biographies that include images and documents from the Society’s rich collection of artworks, photographs, maps, newspapers, rare books, and reference materials. It also includes images and documents from the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia. In addition, Missouri state historic sites and local historical societies have loaned digital images. “Famous Missourians,” which supports the Show-Me State Standards for social studies for fourth grade, provides teachers and students with a comprehensive overview of each subject. This project has been generously supported by grants from the A. P. Green Foundation, the J. C. Penney Foundation, and the Richard S. Brownlee Fund. The ten biographies currently ready for use are Thomas Hart Benton, Susan Elizabeth Blow, Lucile Bluford, George Washington Carver, Samuel Clemens, A. P. Green, Marie Watkins Oliver, J. C. Penney, Sacred Sun, and Helen Stephens. posted @ 8:59 AM December 06, 2006 World War II Posters Help Commemorate Sixty-Fifth Anniversary of Pearl HarborCome view The State Historical Society of Missouri’s exhibit, Careless Talk: World War II Posters from the William Copeland Collection, in observance of the sixty-fifth anniversary of Pearl Harbor on December 7. Careless Talk will be on display in the Society’s North-South Corridor Gallery until December 16. During World War II, the U.S. government employed artists such as Ben Sahn and Lawrence Beall-Smith to use art, illustration, and photographs in an effort to unite the home front during a time of hardship and adversity. One of the government’s chief concerns was the careless, often inadvertent, leaking of information that could be picked up by spies. Other topics illustrated in the exhibit encouraged the public to buy bonds to provide for soldiers and to practice conservation at home. The posters were donated to the Society by Missouri native William Copeland, who collected them while working in Washington, DC, during the war years. The Society is located on the ground floor, east side of Ellis Library on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. The Art Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Contact: Joan Stack, (573) 882-7083 posted @ 9:48 AM December 02, 2006 Society remains closedThe bad road conditions and weather continue to make travel less than safe and The State Historical Society of Missouri will not be open Saturday December 2, 2006.
