More information is available on the Society's Website posted @ 11:49 AM October 17, 2006 Society to Hold Talk on Superstitions in Tom SawyerOn October 26 at 7:00 p.m., Mary Barile, playwright of Leaving Hannibal, will give a talk titled “Doodlebugs, Ghosts, and the Floating Corpse: Superstition in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” The presentation, to be held in the Society, will be free and open to the public.Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) based much of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer on his own boyhood in Hannibal, Missouri, in the 1840s. Among the folklore he learned were superstitions that included ways to tell the future, find a drowned body, and cure warts. As Halloween draws near, explore Thomas Hart Benton’s illustrations for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and learn about some northeast Missouri superstitions. The Society is located on the ground floor, east side of Ellis Library on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. Contact: Christine Montgomery (573) 882-2476 posted @ 11:05 AM October 10, 2006 Annual Meeting and LuncheonWorkshops on Writing Family History and Conducting Oral History Will Be Offered at Annual MeetingThe State Historical Society of Missouri will offer two concurrent workshops, “Recipe for Writing a Family History” and “Oral History and the Five Senses,” as a part of its annual meeting November 4. The hour-long sessions will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be held at the Reynolds Alumni and Visitor Center, 704 Conley Avenue, on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. Each workshop is $12.00 for Society members and $20.00 for nonmembers. Ann Carter Fleming, past president of the National Genealogical Society and the St. Louis Genealogical Society, will present “Recipe for Writing a Family History.” Participants will learn about the necessary ingredients for producing a large volume of family history to be published and preserved. Thomas Miller, who works with the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia’s oral history program, will discuss “Oral History and the Five Senses.” The presentation will show participants how to use their senses to improve the quality of an oral history interview. Other events for the day include the annual business meeting and a luncheon, featuring an address by Ron Powers, writer, broadcaster, and teacher. Powers, William E. Parrish, and Adolf E. Schroeder will be signing copies of their books, including Mark Twain: A Life by Powers; The Civil War in Missouri: Essays from the Missouri Historical Review, 1906-2006, edited and with an introduction by Parrish; and The Arts and Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri, with a new introduction by Schroeder. All three books will be available for sale at the annual meeting. An open house of the Society’s quarters, including the Gallery, will begin around 2:30 p.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m. Reservations must be made by October 27.
