September 29, 2006 Society Hires Curator Dr. Joan Stack has joined the staff of The State Historical Society as curator of its art collection. She will replace Sid Larson, who retired in 2004 after serving the Society for over forty years. The Society’s permanent art collection focuses on works by Missouri or Missouri-related artists, with creations by George Caleb Bingham and Thomas Hart Benton forming the foundation of the collection. As curator, Dr. Stack will assume the responsibility for preparing exhibits from the collection for the Society’s art gallery.Prior to her employment at the Society, Dr. Stack was the associate curator of European and American art at the Museum of Art and Archaeology on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. She has a doctorate in art history and archaeology from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Stack’s father, Frank Stack, and her brother, Robert Stack, are Missouri artists. “We are delighted to have someone with Dr. Stack’s extensive training and experience as the curator of what we know to be one of the most significant collections of Missouri-related artwork in the country,” said Dr. Gary R.
