August 21, 2006 2006 Annual Meeting Speaker / Workshops Ron Powers, writer, broadcaster, and teacher, will be the luncheon speaker at the Society’s annual meeting on November 4. His speech, “Making Him Fresh Again: On Writing Yet Another Mark Twain Biography,” will focus on his 2005 book, Mark Twain: A Life. Powers, a native of Hannibal, has won awards for his commentary and criticism work. He is the author of thirteen books.The State Historical Society will offer two hour-long morning workshops at the annual meeting. Ann Carter Fleming, certified genealogist, will present “Recipe for Writing a Family History.” Participants will learn the necessary ingredients for producing a large volume of family history to be published and preserved. A resident of St. Louis, Fleming is a past president of the National Genealogical Society and the St. Louis Genealogical Society. In the second workshop, Thomas H. Miller will discuss “Oral History and the Five Senses.” The presentation will show participants how to use their senses to improve the quality of an oral history experience. Miller works with the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia’s oral history program. The cost of the workshops is $12.00 for members and $20.00 for nonmembers.
