February 11, 2006 Workshop Will Give Strategies for Researching African American AncestorsOn February 21 at 7:00 p.m., The State Historical Society of Missouri will offer a workshop titled “Using the Internet and African American Research in Missouri.” Traci Wilson-Kleekamp of Columbia will give an overview of the tools and resources available via the Internet to conduct genealogical research for African Americans and will demonstrate research strategies to explore while conducting research on enslaved ancestors. Wilson-Kleekamp has been researching her family, some of whom were once slaves on central Missouri farms and plantations, for seven years.The workshop is open to the public but limited to thirty participants. Preregistration is required. To register, call the Society at (573) 882-7083. The workshop is free for Society members and $10 for nonmembers. Persons interested in joining the Society can do so for $20 for an individual annual membership or $30 for a family annual membership. posted @ 2:41 PM February 10, 2006 “As I Recall” Brings Oral Histories to the Air WavesThe State Historical Society of Missouri is collaborating with the Western Historical Manuscript Collection and KBIA 91.3 FM, a Columbia National Public Radio Station, to produce radio stories based on oral histories housed at the Society and WHMC.This project, titled “As I Recall,” focuses special attention on marginalized and underrepresented voices from Missouri’s past, including those of women, African Americans, and the working class. In addition to using the oral histories already housed in the Society and WHMC collections, this project also collects and broadcasts “new” stories as well. “As I Recall” is scheduled to run Thursday mornings on KBIA during Morning Edition.
