January 18, 2006 Selected Photos of Missouri by Oliver SchuchardOpens January 24An exhibit of photographs by internationally known photographer and University of Missouri-Columbia art professor emeritus Oliver Schuchard will open in the Society’s Main Gallery on January 24. The exhibit features large-format color and black-and-white images of the Missouri landscape and will run through May 26. The artist will be present at the opening reception January 24, 4:30-6:00 p.m., to sign copies of his book, The Landscape in Black and White, recently published by the University of Missouri Press. Schuchard, of Holts Summit, Missouri, has worked in the medium of photography since 1967 and taught in the MU art department for thirty years. Initially working as a landscape painter, Schuchard became intrigued with photography after seeing the work of Ansel Adams. After attending Adams’s Yosemite Photography Workshop, which Schuchard later taught, he went on to study under other important photographers of the twentieth century, such as Al Weber, Imogen Cunningham, and Cole Weston. In the Adams tradition, Schuchard is dedicated to the technical complexity and depth of field provided by large format film. But unlike the grandeur and formal distance achieved in the work of his mentor, Schuchard’s photos are more personal and intimate. Whether he is capturing a hardwood forest outside his farm in Holts Summit or shooting the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, his deep love of the landscape is evident in his work. In conjunction with the exhibit, the artist will present a slide lecture, “Craft, Concept, and Bias: Avoiding Ordinary Photographs,” February 9, 7:00 p.m., at the Society. The lecture will be free and open to the public. posted @ 10:53 AM |
