August 26, 2005 Travels in the Interior of North America: The Aquatints of Karl BodmerSeptember 2, 2005-December 16, 2005 Public Reception: September 9, 4:30-6:00 PM The public is invited to attend a reception in the Main Gallery for the exhibition Travels in the Interior of North America, a selection of aquatint prints by Karl Bodmer. The exhibition runs September 2-December 16, 2005. In May of 1832, Alexander Philip Maximilian, Prince of Wied-Neuwied traveled across North America accompanied only by his valet, David Dreidoppel, and the young Swiss artist Karl Bodmer. While Prince Maximilian set about studying the natural history of the newly opened frontier, Bodmer documented the landscape and native people they encountered on their journey up the Missouri River into present day Montana. W. Raymond Wood, exhibit curator, is professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and editor of Archaeology on the Great Plains. In 2002, he coauthored Karl Bodmer’s Studio: The Newberry Library Bodmer Collection.
