June 29, 2005 Larson’s LegacyState Historical Society of Missouri Main Gallery June 17-August 12, 2005 ![]() The exhibit, curated by Larry Young, includes a wide variety of media, styles, and subject matter. Like their mentor, Sidney Larson, many of the artists are painters. Viewers will see a distinct visual connection to Larson’s technique and imagery in the paintings by Seattle artist Mark Bohne, Albuquerque artist Mabel Culpepper, and San Francisco artist Arthur Koch. Kansas City designer and illustrator Bense Garza and Columbia sculptor Larry Young are more contemporary and abstract in their imagery, but offer insight to the importance of composition learned under Larson. A vibrant use of color distinguishes the work of painters Pamela Bradford from Oklahoma, Brian Mahieu from Columbia, and Sue McNary from California. Rounding out the exhibit are Nebraska ceramicist Pete Pinnell and three mid-Missouri artists, jeweler Ken Greene, graphic artist Kim Watson, and painter/sculptor Lonnie Tapia. What unites these artists is their universal affection and respect for Sid Larson, their teacher and mentor, whose work will also be on display at the show. Larson also found the energy and dedication to serve as curator of the State Historical Society of Missouri, where he organized the annual slate of exhibitions and supervised the care of the Society’s extensive art collection until his retirement in fall 2004. Christine Montgomery, photograph specialist at the Society, worked with Larson from 1999 until his retirement. “Sid taught me to view exhibit installation as a work of art in itself. I feel honored that I had the opportunity to work with him. He has an incredible generosity of spirit. When Sid’s around, it feels like everything is possible.” The Society honored Larson upon his retirement with the creation of the Sidney Larson Fund. The interest from the fund will be used to purchase art or otherwise enhance the art collection Larson devoted so much of his life toward building. The artists in this exhibition have generously agreed to donate a portion of their sales from the exhibit to the Fund. posted @ 10:50 AM
