January 21, 2005 Newspaper Library Workshop Will Aid Society PatronsThe second workshop in the State Historical Society of Missouri’s new series, titled “The Newspaper Library: Using Newspapers,” will be held Tuesday, February 8 and Tuesday, February 15 in the Society’s quarters on the University of Missouri–Columbia campus. The workshop will focus on the Society’s Newspaper Library, which holds the largest collection of local newspapers in the country. Society staff will present a brief history of newspaper publishing in the state, highlight newspapers in the collection, solve common problems encountered when using old newspapers for research, emphasize frequently overlooked clues, and demonstrate how to use the collection for historical and genealogical research. The session will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and time will be allowed for research.Each workshop is open to the public but limited to fifteen participants. Pre-registration is required, and registration forms can be downloaded from the Society’s Web site, or requested by calling (573) 882-7083. The workshops are free for Society members and $10 for non-members. Persons interested in joining the Society can do so for $20 for an individual annual membership or $30 for a family annual membership. The workshops, which highlight the Society’s research collections and provide beginning research training to persons interested in history and genealogy, will now be offered the second and third Tuesdays of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The workshops are limited to 15 per session, and pre-registration is required.
