October 07, 2004 Society receives Fred Shane painting![]() Anne Cope of Columbia recently donated a painting by Missouri artist Fred Shane to the State Historical Society of Missouri. The painting, an untitled landscape, was initially given to Mrs. Cope’s husband, the late Dr. James C. Cope, by the artist in gratitude for the doctor’s care of Shane’s terminally ill wife. Dr. Cope, a well-known figure in Columbia, passed away in February 2003. The Society holds a large collection of Shane’s work donated by the artist and later, upon his death, by his daughter, Claire Shane Lohnes, as well as other donors. A selection of Shane’s paintings and drawings is currently on display in the Society’s Main Gallery through December 30, 2004. The Kansas City artist taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia art department for more than thirty-five years before his retirement in 1971. He then moved to California, where he died in 1990. posted @ 11:11 AM |
