Welcome to the 50th Annual Missouri Conference on History!
Perhaps it is significant that the fiftieth Missouri Conference on History places the gathering on the very same April dates as the first meeting in 1959. Held in the Memorial Student Union on the University of Missouri campus, the opening conference was a collaborative effort, “open to all history teachers throughout the State,” with high hopes to return annually “if enough interest is shown.”
Fortunately, the conference has proved a valued tradition throughout the history community, serving its original purpose to “acquaint teachers with recent developments in historical research, stimulate reflection on the nature of history, and establish personal contacts between historians.” Surely this last goal has the greatest meaning at the half-century mark with the involvement of three distinguished scholars who attended the first conference and serve our 2008 meeting as honorary co-presidents: Richard S. Kirkendall, Perry McCandless, and William E. Parrish.
On behalf of the City of Columbia, the University of Missouri, The State Historical Society of Missouri, and the Conference Steering Committee, welcome to the 2008 Missouri Conference on History! I trust you will enjoy a rich academic and rewarding collegial experience.
