Two diaries of Sgt. Frances M. Gordon, who served with Company D, 2nd Colorado Cavalry. The diaries describe escort duty and encounters with bushwhackers in Jackson and Cass Counties, Missouri, and Sterling Price’s raid in September and October 1864. Miscellaneous notes and account figures are included in the back of both volumes.
The Civil War diaries were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Thomas C. Hutchinson on 1 August 2003 (Accession No. 5999).
The Civil War diaries consist of two volumes spanning from 1864 to 1867. The actual diary entries composed by Francis M. Gordon are for January 1 through October 23, 1864. Both volumes contain additional lists of accounts (cash and sale) and miscellaneous notes for 1864 through 1867. Volume 2 includes a list of birth and death dates for members of the Gordon and Perkins families; a roster for members of Company D, 2nd Colorado Cavalry; and a list of prisoners, who are mostly likely the 33 Confederate soldiers that Gordon described his unit capturing at the Battle of Westport on October 23, 1864.
The 2nd Colorado Cavalry was posted to western Missouri in 1864 and conducted operations against bushwhackers and fought in various skirmishes and battles. The entries offer a vivid description of the daily operations of a Union cavalry unit, including details of patrols, escorts, skirmishes, and everyday military life. Gordon describes church and temperance meetings, patrols and escorts, bushwhackers, unit actions, and the various rumors circulating camp. Volume 2 contains an excellent account of Sterling Price’s raid into Missouri in 1864, and the author’s subsequent involvement at the battles of Little Blue River and Westport.
Also included in volume 1 were four reproductions of Colonial currency in various amounts.
