The Harold F. Kaufman Papers consist of correspondence, projects and studies, course materials, and manuscripts of a professor of sociology at Mississippi State University.

The Kaufman Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Harold F. Kaufman on 22 January 1990 (Accession No. 4939).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Harold Frederick Kaufman was born 6 May 1911 in Greenville, Ohio. He received an A.B. in 1938 and an A.M in 1939 in Sociology from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Cornell University in 1942. He taught at the University of Missouri from 1942 to 1945 and various other universities until he became chair of the newly created Division of Sociology and Rural Life at Mississippi State University in 1948. He served as chair until 1961. He was director of the Social Science Research Center at Mississippi State from 1960 to 1969 and was a research professor of sociology from 1969 to 1976. His areas of research were in community, social stratification, and rural sociology.

Kaufman taught extensively throughout the world including northern India, Nigeria, and South Africa. Kaufman was also active in the Christian Church and was one of the organizers of the University Christian Church in Starkville, Mississippi.

Harolf F. Kaufman married Lois Cook on 8 June 1939. They had one son H. Lynn Kaufman died on 15 September 1990.
