DONOR INFORMATION

The Twin Lakes Duck Hunting Camp Records were loaned to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Al M. Price for microfilming on May 5, 1998 (Accession No. 5763).

ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

The Twin Lakes Duck Hunting Camp was established in 1945 on land purchased by R.B. Price and others adjacent to the Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge, near Sumner in Chariton County, Missouri. The Swan Lake Refuge was established in 1937 to preserve geese, ducks and prairie chickens. A detailed account of the acquisition and development of the camp precedes the log entries.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of the Twin Lakes Duck Hunting Camp consist primarily of daily hunting logs kept during the Missouri duck and goose hunting season--which runs from October through December--from the camp's first season in 1946 through 1989. The data recorded on the log sheets include: date and day of the week, names of shooters, temperature and general weather conditions, an account of the days events, and the number and species of ducks and geese taken. The amount of detail in the entries varies and often includes descriptions of camp maintenance and social activities along with the hunting data. Arranged chronologically, the log is complete for the years 1946 through 1978, with less extensive coverage for the 1979-1989 period.

A sampling of photographs of camp and field scenes, and a small quantity of correspondence, newspaper clippings and miscellaneous papers related to the operation of the camp and duck and goose hunting in northern Missouri augment the logs.

Related materials, including maps and miscellaneous material concerning the adjacent Swan Lake Wildlife Refuge, and programs of the Annual Wild Goose Festival held at nearby Sumner, Missouri, complete the Twin Lakes Hunting Camp records.
