The papers of Lucie Ebeuhoh, of St. Louis, Missouri, consist of personal correspondence with her future husband Phillip Ebeuhoh in 1897 and 1898, and to Phillip while she was on a European trip in 1908.
The Lucie Ebeuhoh Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Eula J. Dennis on May 24, 1994 (SHS Accession No. 3012).
Lucie Ebeuhoh was a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, during the 1890's and the early 1900's. During the time period in which the letters were written she worked as a housekeeper and nanny in St. Louis. There she met Phillip Ebeuhoh, her future husband, who was an employee of the United States Marine Hospital in St. Louis. Lucie was the mother of at least one child, Annie Ebeuhoh.
The Lucie Ebeuhoh Papers consist of personal correspondence with her future husband Phillip Ebeuhoh in 1897 and 1898, and to Phillip while she was on a European trip in 1908. The letters reveal many aspects of a romantic relationship such as the planning of dates, discussions of a wedding, and jealousy and the discomfort of one companion with the other's family. The letters of 1897 and 1898 do not describe St. Louis during this time period, but deal strictly with the relationship between Lucie and Phillip. The letters of 1908 give some brief descriptions of France, Germany, and England, but are concerned mostly with relatives Lucie visited while in Europe. The letters are arranged chronologically.
