Ethelda Henry, Genealogical Collection, 1671-1988, n.d. (C3881)

34.6 linear feet

INTRODUCTION

Family histories and genealogies of over 400 Boone County and central Missouri families, including the Asbell family. The collection also includes cemetery, census, marriage, school, will, Bible, and church records; clippings, photographs, family and genealogical correspondence, source materials, abstracts, and manuscripts; and miscellaneous.

DONOR INFORMATION

The genealogical collection of Ethelda Henry was donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by her husband Carl Henry, on March 27, 1989 (SHS Accession No. 2740).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Ethelda Marie Henry was born on August 26, 1920, in Rockford, Floyd County, Iowa. Her parents were from Missouri; Grover Talmadge Bennett (1893-1964) from Adair County, and Ethel Mary (Devier) Bennett (1916-1953) from Boone County. Ethelda had one sister, Noema Colleen Bennett. Their father was superintendent of schools in Rockford; later he moved his family to Waterloo, Iowa, and taught music in the East Waterloo High School. In 1932 the Bennetts divorced, and Ethelda and her sister came to Boone County with their mother in 1933. Their father remarried and had a second family who lived in Georgia and Alabama.

Ethelda attended Jefferson Junior High School and Hickman High School in Columbia. She was a University of Missouri graduate with a B.S. in education. She taught school for six years during the 1940s at Lake View School, a rural school located near Pierpont in Boone County. On October 10, 1942, she married Carl Leroy Henry, a rural mail carrier and part-time farmer from Ashland. The Henrys had five children: Mike, Nancy, Jeffrey, Jennifer, and John.

Ethelda was a member of the Ashland Garden Club; hundreds of iris varieties still bloom each spring around the Henrys' farm home. She also collected stamps, and was active in 4-H club work. She was a charter member of the Genealogical Society of Central Missouri, and family history and genealogical research were her passion. Her husband Carl and friend Ruth Minner helped her compile Boone and Callaway County cemetery inscriptions, and she authored several genealogical publications.

In 1970 Ethelda began re-editing a history of the Asbell family originally compiled by her father Grover T. Bennett. Her father's research materials and hundreds of letters written by Asbell descendants were at her disposal. Mr. Bennett was president of the National Asbell Association.

Ethelda enjoyed sharing her extensive research findings, and many friendships developed over the years through correspondence and visitors who appeared at all hours on her doorstep seeking family information. At the time of her death she was writing her own history of the Bennett family. Ethelda died on July 23, 1988, and was buried in the Little Bonne Femme Cemetery.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of well documented genealogies, family histories, and information on over 400 Boone County and central Missouri families, compiled and collected by Ethelda Henry. The collection also includes her father's (Grover T., also called George T., Bennett) Asbell Family History, research materials, correspondence, and Henry's revisions. Cemetery, census, marriage, land, school, and will records; Bible and church records and histories; abstracts, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs, family and genealogical correspondence; and miscellaneous items complete the collection. Henry's papers were originally in notebooks and her arrangement of the papers has been maintained.

The dates of the collection are misleading. Copies of wills and other documents date as early as 1671, but the bulk of the collection is from the 1970s and 1980s. Letters to Henry's father date from the 1940s to the 1960s. Scattered newspaper clippings are from the early 1900s.

In addition to the genealogical information, the collection is an excellent source for studies in local and social history. Major emphasis is on families of Cedar Township in Boone County, and Asbell descendants throughout the United States.

The collection is divided into four series:

The Family Information series, arranged alphabetically by family surname, comprises the bulk of the collection and contains newspaper clippings; abstracts of census, cemetery, and marriage records from published and unpublished sources; genealogical family group sheets and charts; legal documents including marriage contracts, wills, and deeds; military records; notes; and correspondence. Additional family information can be found in the Correspondence series as Henry had not abstracted all information from the letters before her death.

Newspaper clippings in this series are of engagements, marriages, births, wedding anniversary celebrations, family reunions, divorces, obituaries, local news, World War II military service, hospital admissions, and historical articles and feature stories. Not all clippings are identified by newspaper. The majority are from Columbia and Ashland papers, and are dated from 1908 to the 1980s with the heaviest concentration in the 1970s and 1980s.

Correspondence is primarily genealogical but includes letters and copies of documents dating as early as 1671 which were sent to Henry and her father from individuals requesting help in compiling their family genealogies. Descriptions of a myriad of topics include early migration to the midwest, pioneer life, Civil War experiences, the daily lives and communities of families, and agriculture.

The family group sheets were completed only after meticulous documentation and verification of data by Henry. Her sources are listed on each sheet.

Asbell family materials comprise 1.2 linear feet of this series and include portions of Grover T. Bennett's research materials and correspondence. All variations in spelling [Asbill, Azbell, Azbill] are entered under "Asbell." Alphabetically arranged materials are followed by census, marriage and miscellaneous records; Asbell genealogical histories by state; materials on Pierce Asbell and related families; notebooks containing Asbell and Bennett genealogies, information on the Tennessee Bennetts and the Indiana Asbells; correspondence sections arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent; sections arranged alphabetically by surname of related families; information on Irish Canadian Asbells, reunions; George T. Bennett's 800 plus page Asbell Family History, Henry's revisions and index; and miscellaneous materials.

Caution is advised in accepting facts from the printed Asbell History as there were several editions and Henry questioned the accuracy of information given in them. In addition to the genealogical information, "tales" of colonial and pioneer life are also unverified and appear somewhat stereotyped. Mr. Bennett failed to cite sources and dates are taken from census records. He was also a lover of a good yarn, according to his daughter. In April 1979 Henry wrote a friend that she was "discarding her father's book and starting all over!" (folder 2358).

There are two incomplete copies of the History and copies of individual sections. Henry has made corrections on some pages. Sections of the history also appear throughout the family information series under surnames of Asbell descendants. Sections 21, 26, 29-32 (pp. 448-511), and 35-36 (pp. 544-575) are missing. Section 39 is in folder 176. There is no index for the original History, but Henry compiled an index. See folder 210 for her corrected edition.

Included among the Asbell Family correspondents was Evelyn Shelton of Bolivar, Polk County. She and Henry shared family and local news; day-to-day activities; views on politics, teenagers, health and retirement concerns; the postal service; and information on Asbell descendants in their correspondence. There is additional correspondence on Asbell families in the Correspondence series.

In the Bennett family section, Bennett, Winkler, and Thurman family correspondence, 1875-1876, from Saline and Chariton counties, contains descriptions of family life, agriculture and floods, and local news. Letters of Grover T. Bennett, 1949-1960s cover Bennett, Asbell and related families, and Azbill reunions.

As descendants of the Bennett and Henry lines, the Crane, Devier, Dinwiddie, Moseley, and Palmer family sections are extensive. They include indices to related families and copies of early wills and estate settlements dating from 1794. The Devier section includes photographs and wills which mention slaves.

The Edwards family section includes letters from a young mother on the sickness and death of her child in 1896, reminiscences of running a grocery and general merchandise business, selling and building caskets in Sapp (Whoop Up), Missouri, the undertaking business, and life in Sapp and Columbia.

The Jones family section includes detailed Civil War and reconstruction reminiscences of William Elijah Jones as told to a family member. Jones was with the 9th Regiment, Missouri Infantry Volunteers (Confederate). The Still family section has 1890s letters describing the daily lives of an Indiana farm family.

The Turley family section has letters of a union soldier to his parents dating from 1863. The Winfrey family section contains correspondence which traces a farm family from Boone and Carroll counties, to the Ozarks, to homesteading in Colorado, and back to Missouri.

The Records and Source Materials series is divided into seven sections:

Published records which have corrections noted by Henry have been kept with the collection.

Cemetery Records include inscriptions from cemeteries in Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Camden, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Western Polk, and Randolph counties; miscellaneous inscriptions; and a few church histories. Records are both published and unpublished with notations and corrections by Henry. Arrangement is alphabetically by county. In the Boone County section, published records precede unpublished records and are arranged alphabetically by cemetery name. A folder of miscellaneous family cemeteries in Boone County follows. A list of Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Boone County is in folder 1783.

Federal Census Records consist of Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry's published records for 54 Missouri counties, 1850-1880. Henry's notes from the 1860, 1870, and 1880 federal censuses are included in the Boone County folders.

Information from Missouri and other states; marriage records from Garrard County, Kentucky, and North and South Carolina; and miscellaneous census materials primarily on Asbell, Bennett, Crane, Dinwiddie, Henry, Moseley, Palmer, Pinkerton, Sapp, and related families comprise the Abstracts of Census Material section.

The Boone County Church Records include abstracts of membership records, minutes, and registers compiled by Henry; transcriptions of minute books of the New Liberty Baptist Church, 1842-1906, and the New Salem Baptist Church, 1828-1879; and church histories.

Marriage Records are for Missouri counties; Adair, Garrard, and Green counties in Kentucky; and Virginia. This section also includes will records for Cooper County, 1820-1870; a will index, 1845-1914, for Moniteau County; deed and will records for Putnam County, 1847-1854 and 1858-1870; Greene County, Kentucky land entries; and indices to Adair and Callaway County biographies.

Death Records include published mortality records from 1850 for Adair - Greene counties; a Boone County death register from 1883-1885, mortality schedules, 1896, 1913; Bible records; Centralia obituaries; and Parker Funeral Home, Columbia, Missouri, Records, 1892-1905, 1915-1925. Published wills and administrations for Boone, Randolph, and Saline counties; will indices for North Carolina, 1760-1800, and copies of will from Giles County, Tennessee, are also included.

The Miscellaneous Material includes school records of the Jones School, District #87 (west of Ashland), March 1876-1901, that list names of white youths and 1893 and 1900 taxpayers. Records from Lakeview School, near Pierpont, dating from 1915 to 1921, include photographs, family information, and materials on the basketball team.

This section also includes letters, newsletters, pamphlets, and publication lists from genealogical and historical societies, publishers, etc; source materials from Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia, with the Garrard County, Kentucky, materials relating primarily to Palmer, Kavanaugh and related families; source materials for Boone and Dade counties; photographs; and printed materials. The scrapbook indices in folder 2059 have no corresponding scrapbooks. It appears that information from the scrapbooks was abstracted by Henry and incorporated into the family information series. The indices are labeled: Lula Rice Cunningham Scrapbook, Mary Ellen Lee, Mildred Pauley Clippings, and Henry's Scrapbook and Miscellaneous. Notes extracted from the Pauley Clippings, primarily on the Sapp family, are with the indices.

Newspaper clippings include marriage license applications, births, and divorces, primarily from Boone County, dating from the 1960s and l970s with a few dated 1948-1950s, and items of interest to Henry. Columbia Missouri Herald articles, 1910-1911, on Boone County history; a collection of historical articles on Columbia and Boone County by John C. Creighton, 1972-1975; and clippings originally in four scrapbooks with numbered pages and indices are also among the clippings.

"Oneita's" scrapbook, arranged alphabetically, covers births, deaths, engagements and weddings, World War II military service, family reunions, local events, churches, schools and teachers, and miscellaneous topics. Clippings are primarily from the Columbia Daily Tribune, 1908-1960, with the heaviest concentration in the 1940s and 1950s.

A photocopy of Stella Homsley's scrapbook contains mostly obituaries and marriage announcements for persons in Boone and surrounding counties, 1910-1970s. Clippings in the Homsley scrapbook are not dated or identified as to paper.

A collection of Jefferson City obituaries and miscellaneous articles, 1968-1983, from the Post Tribune and Daily Capital News, has notations on Boone County connections in the indices. Clippings from the Ashland Bugle, 1910-1950, and abstracts from articles in the Columbia Herald Statesman, 1936-1938, comprise the last scrapbook.

The Correspondence series, 1948-1987, n.d., consists of Henry's correspondence, and letters received by her father Grover T. Bennett. Family charts, notes, records, and source materials from Missouri and other states are included. The correspondence is personal as well as genealogical. Families referred to within the correspondence are listed in bold type on the folder list.

This series has two sections. The first and largest section is arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent and includes copies of Henry's replies. There are 15 folders of Alexander correspondence and materials. Joy Alexander of Ashland, Darrell Crane of Overland Park, and Henry worked on a Crane family history. Joy also worked on related families and did genealogical research for others.

The second section is arranged chronologically and consists of eight folders of miscellaneous correspondence, 1974-1988, n.d., labeled "to answer." See the Family Information series for additional correspondence concerning Asbell (Asbill, Azbell, Azbill) and related families.

The Miscellaneous series consists of papers labeled "to file" and "current work to finish; pages from the "Lineage Memorial of Sophia Elizabeth Kavanaugh-Bear;" Henry's iris garden records listing varieties, location, date of planting and bloom; and index cards with surnames and names of correspondents.

Index entries for the collection are by surname. Although indexing of the collection is extensive, not all surnames are indexed. Researchers are encouraged to use the folder list to guide them through the family information series which holds the bulk of materials on specific families and is arranged alphabetically by surname. Indices in folders 210 (Asbell Family History), 2097 ("Oneida's" Scrapbook), 2107 (Homsley Scrapbook), and in the published sources should also be checked.

Genealogical books and magazines were transferred to the State Historical Society reference library.
