INTRODUCTION

Records of a labor union local which include correspondence, contracts, grievance reports, shop meeting notes, manuals, and production figures and other employee data.

DONOR INFORMATION

The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, Local 323, Records were donated to the University of Missouri by George V. Boyle on October 5, 1990 (Accession No. 4994).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of Local 323 concern labor/management relations at the Higginsville Garment Company and the Higginsville plant of the Frances Gee Garment Company of Kansas City. The records are arranged by subject or type of material and chronologically within each division.

The bulk of the records relate to Union concerns and activities at the shop level, which include wage increases, production problems, and personnel actions. Shop Union meeting notes--taken by the Shop Chairlady--and employee grievance reports, provide the most comprehensive view of day to day labor/management interaction. Records created by the company; i.e., correspondence, worker productivity figures, wage adjustments, time study requests, and employee termination forms; which were utilized by the Union, provide complementary documentation. Records from the 1960s and 1970s are the most complete.

Material concerning the Northwestern District Council and other organizational levels of the ILGWU is limited. Such topics as collective bargaining issues, retirement plans, changes in union personnel and policies, and meetings and elections are covered in the contracts, correspondence, and District Council meeting minutes.
