Lantern slides of Salisbury residents taken along Salisbury streets by an unknown photographer.
The Missouri, Salisbury, Lantern Slides were loaned for copying to the University of Missouri by the Chariton County Historical Society through Martha Fellows on November 4, 1991 (Accession No. 5107).
Salisbury is located in Chariton County in central Missouri. In the 1900s it was the largest town in the county with a population of 2500 and was located on the Wabash railroad main line. It was primarily an agricultural community.
These 148 lantern slides depict residents going about their daily business along the streets of Salisbury. Approximately 104 of the slides have comments written on them that reflect the humor of the day. These slides are roughly arranged into categories that include humorous poses of different occupations, people standing on city streets, people walking along city streets, children, and blacks.
This collection does not provide good views of Salisbury city streets since the photographer seemed intent on photographing people and not the town itself. The slides do provide a good view of what people wore everyday as opposed to what they wore when they had their photograph taken at a studio.
Note: A finished lantern slide includes the slide itself and a piece of glass that protected the emulsion side of the slide. These two pieces are held together by tape along their edges. The slides in this collection are only the slide with no protective glass backing.
