INTRODUCTION
Interviews of and readings by American prose writers. These recordings document the authors' renditions and interpretations of their works. The American Audio Prose Library of Columbia, Missouri; a grant-funded library; organized and produced the recordings for public radio stations and individual purchase.
DONOR INFORMATION
The American Audio Prose Library audio cassettes and tapes were donated to the University of Missouri by the American Audio Prose Library through Kay Bonetti, founder and director, on 21 December 1981 (Accession No. 4390). Additions to the collection were made on 2 December 1982 (Accession No. 4476), 16 February 1983 (Accession No. 4489), 18 May 1984 (Accession No. 4573), 28 January 1985 (Accession No. 4616), 22 May 1985 (Accession No. 4636), 28 August 1985 (Accession No. 4662), 19 December 1985 (Accession No. 4690), 12 January 1989 (Accession No. 4902), 16 July 1990 (Accession No. 4961), 4 October 1993 (Accession No. 5364), and 24 January 1994 (Accession No. 5393).

HISTORICAL SKETCH
In 1979 Kay Bonetti, a University of Missouri-Columbia graduate student, formulated the idea of the American Audio Prose Library (AAPL) along with Speer Morgan, author of Belle Starr and a UMC English professor, because of a need for enduring audio recordings of modern writers. Before AAPL it seems that very few recordings of modern prose writers existed.Equipped with grants from the Missouri Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, AAPL was officially able to begin operation in 1981 under the guidance of Bonetti.
AAPL was the first comprehensive audio library of its kind to establish a permanent record of working writers' lives. By broadcasting prose programs to over 100 public radio stations nationwide, AAPL has maintained a following of listeners. Moreover, in 1984 AAPL was awarded an Ohio State Achievement of Merit Award from Ohio State University.
Nearly all the interviews in this collection were done by Bonetti. Her personal style of questioning allows the writers to talk about their ways of
writing and influences on their writing. Moreover, Bonetti, versed in each author's work through careful reading and research, is able to ask thorough questions concerning their life, work, and ability to write for a living. She allows each interview to form a life of its own, even though she asks each writer some of the same questions.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The American Audio Prose Library consists solely of audio cassettes and tapes. There are no paper records such as correspondence, grant proposals, or account sheets. The audio cassettes are arranged in accession order (the order in which material was received by the State Historical Society of Missouri-Columbia) and then alphabetically by the author's name. The labels on the cassettes have the author's name and some have the recording date, type of recording, and information about whether the tape is edited or not. The audio tapes are arranged similarly to
the audio cassettes. Following the scope and content note is an alphabetical listing of the cassettes and tapes.
