INTRODUCTION

Papers of Stuart Tracey Hadden, a chemical engineer whose research included the statistical mechanics of liquid hydrocarbons. The papers consist of correspondence, memos, copies of reports and professional papers, some printed material, and scientific notes, graphs, lists and tables.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Stuart T. Hadden Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by his daughter, Sharon Hadden, on 20 October 1987 (Accession No. 4807).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Stuart T. Hadden was born 13 August 1911 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He received a B.S.E. in Mathematics (1934) and a B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering (1935) from the University of Michigan. He obtained his M.A. in Mathematics from Temple University (1951) and a doctorate in Chemical Engineering (1965) from New York University.

Hadden worked as an engineer in private industry from 1935-1953 and 1958-1973, interrupted by a period (1953-1957) as an engineering scientist and instructor at N.Y.U. While in the research and development divisions of Socony-Mobil, Dow Chemical, Gulf, and Monsanto, he presented and/or published several papers and reports on his work. Most of his research related to the statistical mechanics of liquid hydrocarbons, thermal cracking, distillation, and mathematical statistics. His research was published in Chemical Engineering Progress, Journal of Chemical Physics, and Petro/Chem Engineer. He was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

After 1973, Hadden did consulting work for several firms. He lived with his daughter near St. Louis until his death on 7 Aug 1987.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Stuart T. Hadden Papers consist of correspondence, memos, copies of reports and professional papers, some printed material, and Hadden's scientific notes, graphs, lists, and tables. The papers primarily document Hadden's career in the chemical industry and as a scientific scholar. They are arranged into three series:

Correspondence Series

The Correspondence series is arranged chronologically and consists primarily of professional correspondence with colleagues, scientists, and publishers. Also included are memos, class notes and bibliographies, and various handwritten notes, charts, lists, and tables of scientific and statistical data. In most cases, they remain with the documents near which they were found. These notes, and the scientific arguments in some of the correspondence, could be of use to students of the history of thermodynamics, distillation, and the statistical mechanics of liquid hydrocarbon systems, although the actual data is probably obsolete.

The Reports/Papers series is comprised of several scientific professional papers and reports prepared by Hadden and other scientists. They are arranged chronologically by date of presentation or publication and cover topics such as: "Vapor-Liquid Equilibria in Hydrocarbon Systems," "Reaction Velocity in Thermal Cracking," "A New Correlation for the Specific Heats of Liquid Hydrocarbons," "Experimental Programs for Developing Process Correlations," and "Multi-Component Distillation Program With Built-In Thermodynamic Properties."
