The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness was first proposed in 1977 to encourage the improvement of the health of the state's citizens. The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport had been established in 1956 and thirteen states had established state councils. Missouri's was established in 1982. Dr. Kathleen Kinderfather, Professor of Physical Education at Harris Stowe State College, was a member of the council from its beginning until 1986. She assisted the council in establishing the Show-Me State Games in 1986.
These papers show the development of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and the development of the Show-Me State Games. Arranged chronologically, Kinderfather collected these papers while on the council from 1982 to 1986. The papers consist of bylaws, correspondence, ephemera, meeting agenda, membership lists, minutes, and press releases. There are a few notes on the minutes and little correspondence.
