INTRODUCTION

Papers pertaining to the 8th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia, which Catherwood commanded during the Civil War. The papers also include incorporation papers, deeds, and correspondence of the Lander Hill Tunnel and Silver Mining Company of New York and Nevada, and a detailed report and drawing for a New York City rapid transit system, 1873.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Catherwood Papers were donated to the University by the Yale University Library on 30 July 1980 with an addition made on 27 August 1980 (Accession No. 4294).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

William L. and Edwin C. Catherwood were in St. Louis by June 1859. During the Civil War Colonel Edwin C. Catherwood served as commanding officer for Catherwood's Battalion, State Militia. This unit became the 5th Battalion, State Militia, Companies A-H, and later the 6th Regiment, Cavalry, State Militia, Companies A-H. Colonel William L. Catherwood commanded Companies A-I, 8th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia during 1864.

Between December 1864 and March 1865, William L. Catherwood began speculating in Nevada mining. He became president of a joint-stock company incorporated in New York which controlled mines in Lander County, Nevada.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The bulk of the collection pertains to William L. Catherwood's command and business dealings, with a few documents pertaining to Edwin C. Catherwood.

Folders 1-10 concern equipping Missouri State Militia and Enrolled Missouri Militia units during the Civil War. A detailed pamphlet and circular, May and July 1863, deal with accountability for ordnance, clothing, camp and garrison equipment. These two pamphlets help to clarify the requisitions and receipts within this and other collections.

The Lander Hill Tunnel and Silver Mining Company, of Nevada and New York, papers, folders 11 and 12, cover only the incorporation of the company and the acquisition of land.
