INTRODUCTIONThe University of Missouri Photographs consist of late nineteenth century and post-World War II (1940s and 1950s) glass lantern and 35mm slides. The photographs include images of people and events connected with the University of Missouri, campus plans, and architectural drawings of university buildings. DONOR INFORMATIONThe University of Missouri Photographs were transferred to the manuscript collection by the University on 10 November 1964 (Accession No. 3592). An addition to the photographs was made by Lawrence T. Rugolo on 22 June 1965 (Accession No. 3623). | ![]() MU students standing near the columns outside of Jesse Hall on the Columbia campus. The University of Missouri Photographs consist of 149 35mm slides and 211 lantern slides. The 35mm slides date from 1937 to 1954 and include photographic images and architectural plans for various buildings on the Columbia campus as well as the University of Missouri-Rolla. The slides are arranged alphabetically by the name of the building depicted with the slides depicting the Rolla campus following the Columbia campus.
The architectural drawings for the Columbia buildings are from the firm of Jamieson and Spearl, St. Louis; the ones for the Rolla campus from the firm of Rathmann, Koelle, and Carroll. These slides document the growth of the two campuses after World War II when attendance boomed as a result of the G.I. loan program which allowed many returning veterans to go to school.
The lantern slides date from 1873 to 1913 and from 1937 to 1954. The 102 lantern slides from 1873 to 1913 are physically arranged in no discernible order and a number of them are undated. Following the slide list in this inventory, there is an appendix which has arranged the subject matter of these slides into five sections: buildings, events, people, athletics, and miscellaneous. Within these sections the slides are alphabetically arranged.
The 109 lantern slides dating from 1937 to 1954 primarily depict the architectural plans for the Columbia and Rolla campuses. They are arranged alphabetically by building name. Eighty-eight of these lantern slides are duplicates of the 35mm slides. Following the slide list in this inventory, there is an appendix which lists the numbers of the duplicate lantern and 35mm slides.
