ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

In 1938 the Missouri State Council of Carpenters was formed by local unions of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, AFL-CIO, throughout Missouri. It represents the international general office with the state, works for unionization, and helps mediate labor disputes between AFL-CIO members unions. The council’s working staff consists of the secretary-treasurer who functions as an executive secretary in running the council and travels throughout the state to mediate and to promote the union. A varying number of general office representatives, whose main function is mediation, work loosely with the council office.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Missouri State Council of Carpenters records are arranged by type of material and then chronologically thereunder.

The Correspondence of the secretary-treasurer is arranged topically within each year. Topical divisions are General, dealing with daily routine and mediation and unionization activities; Convention, including reports and invitations; and Weekly and Financial Reports to the General office, also discussing mediation activities. A fire on 6 December 1958 destroyed a block of correspondence from 1947 to 1953 and some post-1953 materials. The bulk of the collection comprises the office files of secretary-treasurer Melvin E. Shasserre, 1950-c. 1970.

The Calendars and Datebooks contain the meetings and appointments of the secretary-treasurer, Mel Shasserre. Printed reports and information bulletins issued by the general office, the State Councils of Iowa, Wisconsin, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Arkansas, and the Missouri State Labor Council make up the Printed Material section.

The Constitution and Bylaws of the Missouri State Council of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, AFL-CIO are also included in the records.

An incomplete series of the Convention Proceedings of the Missouri State Council of Carpenters, which includes photographs, financial statements, reports of the secretary-treasurer of labor disputes and unionization, and reports of the locals on their activities concludes the records.
