The papers of a Boone County, Missouri, family with roots in North Carolina, include correspondence, genealogical information, and daybooks of a physician, Frank G. Nifong, who married Lavinia Bradford Lenoir.
The Lenoir-Nifong Family Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by the City of Columbia in August 1977 (SHS Accession No. 2103). Additions to the papers were made by Virginia M. Botts on 11 July 1979, 22 and 25 September 1980 (SHS Accession No. 2250) and on 24 November 1980 (SHS Accession No. 2345).
Frank G. Nifong was born on January 19, 1867. He grew up in Madison County and went to Missouri Medical College in 1887 in St. Louis. In 1900 he married Lavinia Lenoir of Columbia, Missouri. Following an active business and social life in St. Louis, the young couple moved in 1905 to the Lenoir Farm, "Maplewood," on the southeast edge of Columbia.
The Lenoirs were Missouri pioneers. Walter Raleigh Lenoir came from North Carolina to Missouri in 1834. Walter Lenoir's son, Slater, married Margaret Ann Bradford of Columbia. Their first child was Lavinia.
Frank Nifong was a leader in his community and profession. He worked with Dr. A. W. McAlester in developing the University of Missouri Medical School. He was also instrumental in the establishment of a system of county hospitals in Missouri and the building of Boone County Hospital.
The Lenoir-Nifong Family Papers are arranged by type of material and include correspondence, genealogical material, the business papers of Dr. Nifong, printed material, photographs, and day books.
