INTRODUCTION

The Barnds Papers consist of an undated memoir and a scrapbook from the 1900s through the 1920s.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Barnds Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by William Paul Barnds on 6 August 1964 (SHS Accession No. 249). An addition to the papers was made by Cam C. Barnds on 13 February 2002 (SHS Accession No. 5906).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

William Fletcher Barnds was born 29 January 1840 in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. He moved with his mother to St. Charles County, Missouri, when he was a boy. In 1860 he married Mary E. Doughty and they had eight children. In 1879 the Barnds family moved to Saline County, Missouri, where Barnds died on 2 October 1926.

Barnds joined the Methodist Church in 1858 and was active in church work. (The above information was from Barnds' obituary found in the scrapbook)

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Barnds Papers consist of an undated and fragmentary memoir of a farmer and a devout and active Methodist. He writes about early Methodism in St. Charles County, his family before and after his marriage, and the hardships of farm life. There is also a scrapbook of items from newspapers including obituaries, articles about Methodists and Methodism, prayers, and miscellaneous items.
