The Thuma Papers include a typescript copy of Valentine Thuma’s Civil War diary from 23 April to 5 August 1861. He was in the 8th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and fought in West Virginia. There are also typescripts of six letters; one from Solomon Bechtel, the brother of Thuma’s wife, Mattie, four from Thuma to Mattie after he re-enlisted and was in Alabama, and one from Mattie to Thuma that he never received.
The diary includes typical entries about setting up and striking camp, discipline, the movement of the regiment, and the Battle of Rich Mountain Pass in West Virginia.
The Thuma Papers were transferred to the Manuscript Collection from the editorial office of the State Historical Society of Missouri on 16 February 2004 (SHS Accession No. 5888.80).
