A letter to an unknown man from Martineau was probably written after she moved to London in 1832 and before she sailed for the United States in 1834. The letter thanks the man for the copy of his pamphlet he sent her. Apparently it dealt with the subjects of education and the position of women in England, subjects of interest to Martineau. She further comments on education in England and expresses surprise at the favorable responses she has received about her chapter on women in a recent publication.
The Harriet Martineau letter was transferred from the State Historical Society of Missouri’s J. Christian Bay Collection to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection on 4 January 1971 (SHS Accession No. 737).
