The John H. Pattrick Papers include photographs and miscellaneous material related to Pattrick’s experiences while stationed in France during World War I, as well as correspondence and scrapbooks documenting his life and the lives of his family before and after the war. An extensive postcard and greeting card collection, which belonged to his daughter, is also included.
The John H. Pattrick Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by John Pattrick’s daughter, Elizabeth Pattrick Mackenzie, on 21 October 1996 (Accession No. 5664). Multiple additions were made to the collection between 1999 and 2006 (Accession No. 5664 and Accession No. 5819). Please consult the reference staff for more information.
John H. Pattrick was born on 24 December 1888, and raised on a farm near Higbee, Missouri. His parents were Melissa Whitmore and William Robert Pattrick. He graduated from Columbia Normal School Academy and Columbia Business College in 1907. In the summer of that year, Pattrick became a traveling stereoscope and Fuller Brush salesman. During the summers of 1908 and 1909, he hoboed throughout the United States exploring various scenic wonders and expositions. He then worked his way through the University of Missouri as secretary to the dean of the Academic School. He graduated in 1912 with a B.S. in Education and an A.B. in Arts and Sciences.
From July 1912 to April 1913 Pattrick was an agent for the claims department of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and from May 1913 to July 1914 he was an agent for a large Hawaiian trust company. While in Hawaii, he also taught English and Bible studies to Chinese boys at the YMCA.
He attended law school at the University of Chicago from September 1914 to September 1915, and then transferred to George Washington University in Washington, D.C. During this time he also taught high school English and was hired to care for an invalid.
When the U.S. entered World War I Pattrick became the third man in the country to volunteer and sailed with the first detachment of American troops to France on the Baltic with General John Pershing on 28 May 1917. Initially he went as a civilian clerk and “confidential secretary” to the Medical Corps of the Quartermaster Department. On 14 May 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps and was commissioned Second Lieutenant. Pattrick was assigned to the military aerial photography school, which was the first of its kind, and he subsequently taught there. The school evolved into the Army Intelligence School. He was serving at the front in the Headquarters of the Second American Army mapping battlefields when the war ended. He taught law in the A.E.F. School in France, which was established for American soldiers awaiting space on ships to return to the U.S. Pattrick was discharged in Washington, D.C., on 29 July 1919. During that same year he was admitted to the Washington, D.C. Bar.
In the early 1920s Pattrick served as an attorney for the U.S. Income Tax Department. He also finished his studies and graduated from George Washington University Law School and the Washington School of Accountancy. Pattrick became secretary to Theodore Gary, chairman of the State Highway Commission in Kansas City, Missouri. In addition, he taught evening classes at the Kansas City School of Law from 1922 to 1927. Harry S Truman was one of his students.
On 3 June 1924, Pattrick married Edna Elizabeth Riley, who went by Elizabeth. The couple honeymooned in Europe and the Middle East. They had two children, Robert Riley Pattrick, born 21 November 1926, and Elizabeth Pattrick Mackenzie, born 26 July 1928.
From the late 1920s into the 1930s Pattrick worked in the banking business, was superintendent of Concordia, Missouri, public schools, and was business manager for Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri. He was an agent for the Estate Tax Department of the Internal Revenue Service in Michigan from 1937 to 1941 and in California from 1941 to 1958.
Pattrick was an independent tax consultant from 1958 until his death in 1970.
The John H. Pattrick Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, postcards, scrapbooks, and miscellaneous material covering Pattrick’s birth, home life, early years, including those at the University of Missouri, and his involvement in the First World War. The papers also document the life of his wife, Edna Elizabeth Riley, and their courtship, marriage, and honeymoon. The remainder of the material focuses on the Pattrick’s two children, and their years together as a family. Please note that additional material has been added to the end of the previously processed collection which accounts for the duplicated series names. The papers are arranged into eight series: Correspondence, Photographs, Miscellaneous Material, Photograph Additions, Correspondence Additions, Miscellaneous Materials Additions, Scrapbooks, and Greeting Cards and Postcards.
The Correspondence series consists of correspondence from Pattrick to his parents, mainly from France during World War I. This series is arranged chronologically. The series emphasizes Pattrick’s impressions and observations of not only his fellow officers, but also of the people and places he visited while stationed in Europe. The letters also indicate Pattrick’s devotion to his parents and his efforts to answer the many questions they asked in their letters to him.
The scope and tone of these letters reflects an older, more mature nature than may be found in other war correspondence. Pattrick was in his late twenties and early thirties and had already traveled extensively. This collection therefore does not represent the typical letters from a young, inexperienced soldier who finds himself in a new country for the first time. For example, Pattrick frequently wrote about just how quickly he adapted to living in France. He particularly spoke of his ever-increasing mastery of the French language and he remarked that he could easily travel anywhere in France because he could speak the language. He pointed out that many fellow soldiers came to him to act as an interpreter. This mastery of the French language also allowed Pattrick to acquire many French friends and acquaintances. One family he befriended, the Baty-Bamberger family, wrote to him years later after World War II, and their letters are contained in this collection.
The Photographs series is comprised of numerous photographs arranged alphabetically by location and/or subject, and dates from 1892 through 1990. The first group of images are from World War I. The remainder covers the Pattrick and Riley families, John’s marriage, honeymoon, and family life. Included are images of military establishments, cities, and people, primarily in France. This material will provide the researcher with strong visual impressions of World War I France.
The Miscellaneous Material series comprises various printed and pictorial material from personal, educational, journalistic, and military sources. The educational material largely reflects student life in higher education during the early twentieth century. The certificates, licenses, and diplomas cover roughly the period 1911 to 1971 and reflect both educational and professional milestones in Pattrick’s life. The sheet music is comprised of various popular musical pieces, which include songs from musicals, as well as romantic and patriotic pieces. In addition, there are some three-dimensional objects collected by Pattrick while he was in France and an interview with Elizabeth Riley Pattrick on audio cassette. As much as possible, this series has been arranged alphabetically by subject.
The Photograph Additions series consists of assorted photographs of family and friends, taken at homes, photography studios, or other locations, with the bulk taken during John and Elizabeth’s honeymoon in 1924. These photographs are arranged by location, but not in alphabetical order, with most having been assigned a number by John Pattrick (please note that there are some gaps in the numbered photographs indicating some are missing and some are located within the scrapbooks). The remainder of the photographs are arranged by topic and time period. The original order of the photographs has been maintained as much as possible.
The Correspondence Additions series includes letters written by Pattrick to his bride-to-be, following his return from France. The letters indicate the affection John and Elizabeth had for each other. After their marriage, there are additional letters to and from his parents, and from his children. Many of the postcards contain correspondence written to the Pattricks from friends traveling around the country and abroad over a period of many years. This material is arranged chronologically.
The Miscellaneous Material Additions series includes playbooks, Robert and Elizabeth Pattrick’s school writing and art projects, picture books, greeting cards, award certificates, and metal stamps with images of John and his wife from the 1920s. As much as possible, this material was left in its original order.
The Scrapbooks series series contain newspaper clippings, photographs, postcards and various other materials visually documenting Pattrick’s experiences in World War I, and the Pattrick family before and after the war. The material covers the 1880s to the 1980s and is arranged by volume number. Daughter Elizabeth Pattrick Mackenzie added supplemental material to some of the scrapbooks, which is contained in folders separate from the scrapbooks.
The Greeting Cards and Postcards series is comprised of daughter Elizabeth Pattrick Mackenzie’s personal collection of cards. The postcards are from both the United States and abroad and have been kept as Elizabeth arranged them- by locations, subjects, themes, artists, and time period. Many were sent to her from friends. In addition, there are assorted playing cards of various sizes and types. One set was found by John H. Pattrick in a German trench in World War I.
