The war diary of a Confederate officer of Company H, 11th Missouri Infantry. Quesenberry sketches the activities of the regiment, which spent the entire war in Arkansas and participated in most of the major engagements in the state as well as the Red River campaign in Louisiana. The diary also contains miscellaneous notes and jottings concerning his activities, and lists of company officers and men and acquaintances.
The Quesenberry Books were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Jewell Mayes on 11 July 1941. She received them from John Horton, a nephew of John P. Quesenberry.
John P. Quesenberry was from Richmond, Ray County, Missouri. In December 1861 he joined the Confederate army of Sterling Price and spent the war in Arkansas.
The Quesenberry Books consist of a three volume Civil War diary, dating from December 1861 to 1865, and a memorandum book, dating from 1859 to 1860. The diary mentions camp activities, rumors, battles, weather, friends, moving and marching, and political opinions and opinions on Confederate officers. The diary was published in serial form in "Ray County Chapters" in the Richmond Missourian, on August 3 to November 16, 1933; June 14 to September 6, 1934; and September 20 to December 6, 1934.
