MICROFILM

INTRODUCTION

The records of the University of Missouri, College of Agriculture includes correspondence and reports of students, faculty, and the administration mostly during the tenure of Dean Frederick B. Mumford.

DONOR INFORMATION

The records were donated to the University of Missouri by the College of Agriculture on 1 March 1944 (Accession No. 95). An addition to the collection was made by Ellis Library on 7 April 1969 (Accession No. 3808).

HISTORICAL SKETCH

The College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts was established on 24 February 1870. George C. Swallow was the first professor and dean of the College. Frederick B. Mumford took over in 1909 and convinced the University administrators that more space was needed for the program. As a result, five new buildings were constructed between 1911 and 1938- the Veterinary Building, Schweitzer Hall, Gwynn Hall, Mumford Hall, and Eckles Hall. Mumford’s term as Dean was followed by M.F. Merritt and Edwin A. Trowbridge.

The College is currently called the School of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources and encompasses the fields of biochemistry, agribusiness, forestry, soil science, fisheries, parks, atmospheric science, and plant sciences.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of the University of Missouri, College of Agriculture include records and correspondence of students, faculty, and the administration mostly during the tenure of Dean Frederick B. Mumford. The records document programs such as Farmers’ Week, College exhibits at the Missouri State Fair, and cooperation with the U.S. Council of National Defense during World War I.

The papers are arranged into seven series:

The series are arranged topically and chronologically therein. Correspondence within the series is then arranged alphabetically by correspondent’s last name.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE MICROFILM

Mistakes occurred in the process of filming the collection and users will find boxes missing or spliced into the wrong places. There are two sets of boxes numbered 1 through 7 and 62 through 114. Also, boxes labeled 61 appear on three different rolls of film so it is important to pay attention to the roll number as well as the box number when using the records.

Two rows of images are filmed on each roll. The first row, Side A, runs in one direction on the film, and the second row, Side B, runs in the other direction.

Faculty Series

The Faculty series contains administrative correspondence and reports, and correspondence concerning position vacancies. The faculty reports consist of correspondence with faculty at Missouri and other schools, administrative personnel at state and federal agencies, students, and others around the country with an interest in agricultural matters. As such, they essentially document the same activities as the faculty correspondence in this series. Both concern such matters as stock raising and breeding, livestock expositions, animal disease control; questions concerning soils, land, fertility, geological formations, insect control, and farm buildings; special student problems, scholarships, and disciplinary action.

There is some material concerning departmental organization and special work within the College, especially for Poultry Husbandry, Horticulture, Forestry, and Home Economics.
