Letters written to a professor of agricultural economics at Cornell University by the poet John G. Neihardt (1884-1973), and related items.
The M. Slade Kendrick Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by M.Slade Kendrick, May through September, 1975 (Accession Nos. 3961 and 3970).
John G. Neihardt and M. Slade Kendrick were close friends for over twenty years. This collection contains letters written by Neihardt to Kendrick beginning in 1951, when the two first met, and continuing up to 1973, the year of Neihardt's death. Neihardt's deep regard for Kendrick is exhibited throughout the letters, and he relates his thoughts about his writing, teaching, and family and friends. The collection also contains a map drawn by Neihardt of the Battle of Little Big Horn; a six page manuscript describing a religious ceremony -- the Sioux Prayer Garden; and a typescript of the letters assembled by Kendrick, "Letters of John Neihardt to a Friend, and Selections From His Writings".
