Collection of twelve daybooks, 1855-1900, and twelve ledger books, 1865-1905, which give a daily record of visits made and fees charged by Dr. Charles M. Johnson and other doctors who practiced with him in St. Charles, Missouri.
The records were donated to the University of Missouri by Daughters of the American Revolution through Mrs. G.W. McElhiney, Sr. on 3 November 1948 (Accession No. 2946).
Dr. Samuel Overall was apparently working at an established medical practice in St. Charles during the mid 1850s. Dr. Johnson seems to have moved into the community, setting up his practice sometime about 1865. Entries in the 1869-1870 daybook indicate that Overall and Johnson became partners sometime during that period. They remained together until sometime in February 1874. By the mid 1890s there seem to have been several doctors in practice with Johnson, including Dr. Edwards, Dr. Bates, Dr. Frye and Dr. Bouere.
Although sketchy, this collection forms a basis for medical and family history for the city of St. Charles in the late nineteenth century. The books contain names of heads of household, wives, and children, and notes on birth dates, illnesses, and when medicine was prescribed. In the ledgers especially, there are often comments on where people worked and lived. Many family relationships are spelled out in notes like “Peter Taylon’s son-in-law.” Approximate death dates can be ascertained from the doctor’s notations of “widow” and sometimes simply “dead.” Occasional editorial comments like “dead beat” add a little spice.
Some of the early volumes have diary type entries telling of events such as a man being killed when he was thrown from his buggy. Office expenses are recorded in some of the volumes and several formulas for prescriptions are noted on the end sheets of the daybooks.
The records have been arranged into the following series:
