The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by F.A. Middlebush in April 1958 (Accession No. 3342).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Frederick A. Middlebush was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on October 13, 1890 to Wietsche and Nellie Mastenbrock Middlebush. He received the degrees of A.B. (1913), A.M. (1914), and Ph.D. (1916) from the University of Michigan. He taught in country and public schools, 1908-1912; was associate professor of political science in 1922; and became a professor in 1923. Middlebush served as acting dean of the School of Business and Public Administration, 1925-1926, and as dean, 1926-1935; from June to October 1931 and from September 1934 through June 1955, he served as acting president of the university. He became president on July 1, 1935, and served until his retirement on July 1, 1954. He was succeeded in office by Elmer Ellis.

While president of the University of Missouri, Middlebush was active in education on a national level. Beginning in 1949, he served on the Commission on the Financing of Higher Education; in 1950 he was appointed a member of the National Science Board, National Science Foundation. He was active on this committee throughout his career. He also served on the Navy Civilian Advisory Committee (1946) and on the Committee on the Present Danger (1951).

Middlebush married Catherin Sofie Paine of Lake View, Iowa, in September 1917. They resided in Columbia, Missouri, but also maintained a vacation cabin at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, and a home in Florida. Middlebush was an avid sportsman and frequently planned hunting and fishing excursions. At the time of his death, the Middlebushes resided at Lenoir Home, Columbia, Missouri.

Budget Requests and Reports. Legislative budget requests data for the Biennium, July 1, 1955-June 30, 1957, for both the divisions of the University at Columbia and Rolla

Tenure. Mostly correspondence to and from other universities and colleges in regard to their plans or rules covering faculty tenures of office.

Admission of Negroes. Contains correspondence centering around Negro applications and transcripts for admission to the University. Replies and inter-department correspondence revolves around the over-all policy of the University up to the admission of the first Negro student.

Missouri Crippled Children's Service. Notes and survey material concerning the history, needs, and the place in the University of the Missouri State Crippled Children's Service.

Fire Prevention. Correspondence concerning the designation of the Governor's Conference on Fire Prevention, official and other pre-conference plans. Summaries and reports of the conference complete this section.

School of Medicine. A mimeographed report on the University of Missouri School of Medicine by the Special Committee of the Board of Curators.

Adult Education. Copies of form letters that were sent out to all educational institutions by the state coordinator of the NEA. There are the replies by the institutions usually accompanied by forms concerning their programs on Adult Education.

Physical Education and Athletics. Report of the Committee on Long Range Plans for Physical Education and Athletics. This report gives specific details on the type and the place of expansion.
