The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Flora H. Greene and Mrs. Bolton White on 22 May 1947 (Accession No. 2895).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Charles Wilson Greene was born in Milltown, Indiana, on 12 August 1886. He was a member of the first graduating class from Stanford University in 1892 and received his A.M. in 1893. From 1893 to 1896, he was an instructor in physiology. Green started his Ph.D. studies at Johns Hopkins in 1896, studying under Henry Newell Martin, a physiologist interested in cardiac function. Greene returned to Stanford after receiving his Ph.D. in 1898. Two years later, he moved to Columbia, Missouri, to become a professor of physiology and pharmacology until his retirement in 1936.

While at Missouri, Greene became a special investigator for the Bureau of Fisheries between 1901 and 1917. He started his salmon research during the summers of 1901 and 1902, studying physiological changes that salmon undergo during their spawning migration with much of the work being done at the Baird Hatchery in California. Greene was the first investigator to measure blood pressure in salmonids.

Greene married Flora Hartley of Yankeetown, Indiana, on 7 August 1895. They had two sons and one daughter. Greene was a member of numerous national professional organizations and served as a major in the Sanitation Corps from 1917 to 1918. He died on 1 May 1947.
