INTRODUCTION

Business papers recording farming, mining, and mercantile activities in southeast Missouri, particularly Potosi and Washington County. The collection contains family correspondence, legal and financial records, as well as medical notebooks from Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Blount Family Papers were deposited at the University of Missouri by Don Simpson on 9 February 1948 (Accession No. 2915).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

R.A. and Thomp F. Blount were involved in lead mining at Blount Mines in Miami, Oklahoma and Washington Land and Mining Company in Palmer, Missouri. The family also had interests in farming and a mercantile store in Potosi, Missouri.

Harry J. Blount studied medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri from 1907 to 1908.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Blount Family Papers consists of correspondence, legal, and financial records detailing their mining and mercantile businesses in southeast Missouri and northwest Oklahoma. The collection also contains medical student notebooks from the early 1900s and is divided into seven series: Printed Materials, Correspondence, Financial Papers, Legal Papers, Miscellaneous Papers, Record Books, and Medical Books.

The Printed Materials series consists of church quarterlies, medical student textbook lists, issues of Medical Record, and a machinery catalog.

The Correspondence series is divided between Mercantile correspondence and Mining and Mercantile correspondence. The Mercantile correspondence consists of letters between Thomp F. Blount and J.A. Ainsworth with livestock commission agents, wholesale dealers in St. Louis, Missouri, Illinois, and farmers in southeast Missouri concerning cattle markets, trade, and prices. Other correspondence deals with grain and seed orders, prices, and shipments, Civil War pension claims of Washington County, Missouri, residents, and business correspondence with merchants, insurance agents, car deals, and real estate dealers. The series also includes a small amount of family and social correspondence.

The Mining and Mercantile correspondence of Thomp F. Blount concerns zinc, barite, and lead mining at the Palmer Lead Company and Washington Land and Mining Company, Potosi, Missouri; Potosi Zinc Company, Golden Rod Mining Company, and T.F. Blount Mining Company, Miami, Oklahoma. Correspondence with W.C. Hogoboom, superintendent of Blount mines in Oklahoma, contains weekly reports including expenses, drill records, shipping, and sampling reports and prices. Other correspondence is written between Blount and mining and chemical companies, smelting and refining companies, and government agencies concerning mining in Colorado, Oklahoma, and southeast Missouri. There is also some correspondence concerning Blount and Bust General Merchandise Store in Potosi.

The Financial Papers series is divided between the mercantile and mining operations. The mercantile records include accounts and bills, checks, invoices, receipts, bills from wholesalers, correspondence, freight bills, and livestock market reports. The mining records include checks, receipts, orders, freight bills and shipping receipts for supplies, equipment, and crude barite ore, payrolls, royalty statements, and general expenditure statements including drilling, assaying, labor, supplies and prospecting of the family owned lead companies in Missouri and Oklahoma.

The Legal Papers series includes abstracts of title and land surveys for Washington County, Missouri, deeds, contracts, pension claim reports, mining leases in Missouri and Oklahoma, and a legal brief concerning R.A. Blount and a labor union dispute.

The Miscellaneous Papers series contains maps of Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri mining districts, as well as papers concerning workman’s compensation insurance, a photograph, government publications on mines and mining, and miscellaneous family mementos.

The Record Books series consists of payroll ledgers, mercantile account books, farm journal day-by-day records, mining accounts, inventories, and a bookkeeping textbook. The series also contains ore weight measurements, lead mining notebooks, mining bank deposits and drill hole records, rent receipts, real estate account books, and lead weight tickets.

The Medical Books series contains Harry J. Blount’s student notebooks from Barnes Hospital, St. Louis from 1907 to 1908, a medical advertising catalog for anitphlogistive, and a medical account book from 1920 to 1921.
