The Papers of the International Institute of St. Louis were deposited in the Immigration History Research Center in August 1976. They were secured through the efforts of Rudolph J. Vecoli, Professor of History at the University of Minnesota and Director of the Immigration History Research Center, and Margaret G. Richards, formerly of the International Institute of St. Louis. An agreement reached in May 1976 between the International Institute of St. Louis Board of Directors and the Immigration History Research Center stipulated that all casework records will be excluded from the depository collection until such time that a policy statement on this material has been issued by the American Council for Nationalities Service (New York), with which the St. Louis International Institute is affiliated. The microfilm copy, however, does not include all published or near-print materials issued by national organizations (e.g. the Interpreter Releases from the Common Council for American Unity). The microfilm copy is selective in its inclusion of other printed material (largely newspaper clippings and magazine articles) as well as various club and group activity records found under Series 17 in the collection's organizational framework.

The collection contains a wide variety of materials including publications, correspondence, newsclippings, artifacts, photographs, films, tapes and records. In processing the records the original categorization used by the League was maintained. One of the most interesting aspects of the collection revolves around the Leagues habit of collecting information on both sides of a issue even if the material was unflattering to the organization or its position. In addition to records relating to the St. Louis area, the collection also contains a series on the Missouri League of Women Voters and the National League of Women Voters. These series contain communications between the St. Louis League and the state and national offices. It should be noted that information on a given subject may be found in several different series, thus an extensive index has been included.

The MYC was created in 1956 by joint action of St. Louis City and County officials as a planning organization for research, study, and coordination of juvenile agencies. The MYC consulted on juvenile problems in the city and various county municipalities on a wide area of problems: gangs, curfew laws, truancy, police techniques with youth, etc. The MYC used police apprehension data and juvenile court records to develop a standard analysis for identifying deliquent youth and planning prevention and control programs. The MYC also served as the administrative agent for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Juvenile Officers' Association. The MYC was absorbed by the Health and Welfare Council of Metropolitan St. Louis in January, 1966.

MAHPER is a voluntary professional organization made up of individuals representing schools, health and recreation agencies and other institutions interested in the development of these three fields. Its membership consists of teachers in health education, physical education, coaches, recreation leaders, nurses, health coordinators, supervisors, and administrators in these three fields and major students. Founded in 1936 as the Missouri State Physical Education Association, the name was changed two years later to reflect their broader interests. MAHPER was instrumental in revising statewide Health & Physical Education curricula.

The Missouri Coalition for Correctional Justice (MCCJ) was organized on 14 June 1975, as an expansion and replacement for the Missouri Citizens for Corrections which was active from 1973 through 1974. The coalition's purpose was to educate the public on prison conditions and promote programs of education and rehabilitation in cooperation with the Missouri State Division of Corrections. Grants from the Missouri Committee for the Humanities sponsored classes and tutoring sessions at the Missouri State Prison and the Renz Correctional Facility in Jefferson City, and the Women's State Correctional Prison in Tipton. Later grants funded panel discussions across the state. The narrative grant proposals and final reports, which detail the programming, are within the collection. MCCJ was a cooperative effort of many organizations and individuals but Dr. J. Noel Heermance, professor of English at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, was the director and driving force.

MSHA was formed in 1909 by doctors, social workers and others interested in the dissemination of knowledge and concerning social hygiene. Their educational campaign included public lectures, college courses, meetings with allied groups and surveys of prostitution, social settlements and venereal disease in St. Louis. From 1928-1933 MSHA advocated sex education, child welfare, the playground movement, the appointment of policewomen and a visiting teachers' program.

Kate O’Hare’s letters to her family, April 20, 1919, to April 8, 1920, published in newspapers, and reproduced in book form April 14, 1920. Mrs. O’Hare, a Socialist reformer, wrote the letters from the Missouri State Penitentiary, where she served a 14 month term for opposing the draft for World War I. They acknowledge gifts and letters, and discuss the Socialist movement, diseases, prison food, heat and ventilation, and mental disturbances of inmates.

Provident Counseling is a therapeutic resource for St. Louis families. Records include a St. Louis charity directory, 1909; history of children's aid society; board and executive committee minutes and annual reports.

The ROWEL collection covers the period between 1971 and 1998. It specifically contains correspondence written to members and legislators requesting action pertaining to state AFDC legislation. In addition, the collection contains education tools, such as fact sheets meant to explode myths about welfare. ROWEL also used an education tool called the "Welfare Simulation", designed to demonstrate the difficultly of living on an extremely narrow welfare-based budget. Other pieces of the collection include evaluation of ROWEL education programs, as well as newsletters and Actions Alerts designed to keep members updated on the progress of legislation and the organization's legislative goals. The final component of the collection includes organizational documents, such as meeting minutes, reports, and membership information.

James Henry (Jimmy) Rollins was a black civil rights activist and University of Missouri law student who was convicted of dispensing marijuana in 1968, jumped bail to avoid prosecution and was subsequently caught and imprisoned in 1974 for that and other crimes. The papers consist primarily of letters from the imprisoned Rollins to one of his supporters, and of notes, newspaper clippings, case files, and other printed material related either to his case or to contemporary political and racial conditions in Columbia and at the University of Missouri.

This collection is a continuation of a previous one, Collection number 83. The records in the addenda appear to be more complete than the original donation. The scholarship meeting minutes and those of the Board of Directors are complete for the years listed. The student correspondence from the 1940s also adds a great deal of information, especially about young men who were fighting in the World War, is particularly enlightening. Besides the aforementioned topics, however, the collection's material is incomplete and therefore not exceptionally informative. The annual reports for the few years which are listed are helpful to document the Foundation's activities, but too few of these reports were donated with this collection. Information on the organization's goals and purpose can, however, be found here.

The St. Louis YMCA Addenda Collection consists of documents, videos, photos & negatives, slides, books, and ephemera. The collection is divided into 15 series organized by branch. Each subsequent branch is provided with its own series which are organized in alphabetical order. The collection covers important topics such as the Great Depression, African Americans, World War I & II, and reaches from 1876 to 2003.

The YWCA collection covers the organization's activities from its inception in 1904 to the late 1970s. The constitution and bylaws along with revisions and complete financial records are included. The St. Louis YWCA was divided into several branches, including a segregated club for black girls and each of these groups is represented in the records which include documentation on programs, summer camps and clubs maintained by the various branches. The collection also includes a record of programs for which the YWCA shared responsibility with similar organization's, such as the USO, American Red Cross and the YMCA.
