The Ernest Calloway addenda contains a great deal more material than the original collection (S0011). It documents his education and his various careers as a labor organizer, politician, civil rights worker, journalist and teacher. It includes articles by and about Calloway, complete runs of newspapers he published, studies, reports and article he compiled, material from his tenure as St. Louis NAACP president and his political campaigns. It also includes college notes and texts, church programs, plaques and certificates. The Ernest Calloway addenda also contains many photographs, from his personal collection and that of newspapers he edited. The bulk of the material dates from 1932 but two church programs collected by Calloway date from 1921 and 1927 (see series 8).

George Cresswell (1796-1871) emigrated to the United States from his native England in 1821. After living briefly in Pennsylvania he brought his family to Washington County in the new state of Missouri. There he acquired large holdings of land and became involved in farming, lead mining and smelting, flour milling, and the mercantile trade. His home and business activities eventually were established at Aptus, on Mineral Fork Creek about ten miles north of Potosi, the county seat. Today the Cresswell house and ruins of the lead furnace still stand and are owned by a descendent of George Cresswell.

Several collections in the State Historical Society of Missouri Research Center-St. Louis relate to the Liddell v Board of Education case, but the Hungate-St. Louis School Desegregation Case collection (1972-1985) includes material not available elsewhere. In sum, the Hungate Collection provides an insight into how the Judge and his staff prepared for hearings and rulings related to the case, in some instances, in great detail. Of particular importance are the working papers, research sources, and early drafts prepared by Hungate and his staff in preparing court orders and rulings, and in correspondence with litigants in the case. Many of the drafts include marginal comments in Hungate's handwriting. Another important series contains letters sent to Judge Hungate, not only from St. Louisans and Missourians but from around the country. The letters also provide insight to the sensitive nature of this crucial case as it related to race relations generally.

The Papers of the International Institute of St. Louis were deposited in the Immigration History Research Center in August 1976. They were secured through the efforts of Rudolph J. Vecoli, Professor of History at the University of Minnesota and Director of the Immigration History Research Center, and Margaret G. Richards, formerly of the International Institute of St. Louis. An agreement reached in May 1976 between the International Institute of St. Louis Board of Directors and the Immigration History Research Center stipulated that all casework records will be excluded from the depository collection until such time that a policy statement on this material has been issued by the American Council for Nationalities Service (New York), with which the St. Louis International Institute is affiliated. The microfilm copy, however, does not include all published or near-print materials issued by national organizations (e.g. the Interpreter Releases from the Common Council for American Unity). The microfilm copy is selective in its inclusion of other printed material (largely newspaper clippings and magazine articles) as well as various club and group activity records found under Series 17 in the collection's organizational framework.

The collection contains a wide variety of materials including publications, correspondence, newsclippings, artifacts, photographs, films, tapes and records. In processing the records the original categorization used by the League was maintained. One of the most interesting aspects of the collection revolves around the Leagues habit of collecting information on both sides of a issue even if the material was unflattering to the organization or its position. In addition to records relating to the St. Louis area, the collection also contains a series on the Missouri League of Women Voters and the National League of Women Voters. These series contain communications between the St. Louis League and the state and national offices. It should be noted that information on a given subject may be found in several different series, thus an extensive index has been included.

U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri. Between 1972-1981, Meredith oversaw the legal battle to desegregate the St. Louis Public Schools. He ruled in 1979 that the Board of Education did not hold the responsibility for racial imbalance in city schools. When the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed his ruling, Meredith became committed to voluntary desegregation. Includes seven scrapbooks containing newsclippings, memorabilia and photographs.

Founded in 1936 as the Missouri State Physical Education Association, the name was changed two years later to reflect their broader interests. MAHPER was instrumental in revising statewide Health & Physical Education curricula.

These records not only document in great detail how the school system was run in St. Francois County, but also provide a picture of the whole community. They would be of value to anyone studying the history of education or the county during the 1870s and 1880s.

James Henry (Jimmy) Rollins was a black civil rights activist and University of Missouri law student who was convicted of dispensing marijuana in 1968, jumped bail to avoid prosecution and was subsequently caught and imprisoned in 1974 for that and other crimes. The papers consist primarily of letters from the imprisoned Rollins to one of his supporters, and of notes, newspaper clippings, case files, and other printed material related either to his case or to contemporary political and racial conditions in Columbia and at the University of Missouri.

This collection is a continuation of a previous one, Collection number 83. The records in the addenda appear to be more complete than the original donation. The scholarship meeting minutes and those of the Board of Directors are complete for the years listed. The student correspondence from the 1940s also adds a great deal of information, especially about young men who were fighting in the World War, is particularly enlightening. Besides the aforementioned topics, however, the collection's material is incomplete and therefore not exceptionally informative. The annual reports for the few years which are listed are helpful to document the Foundation's activities, but too few of these reports were donated with this collection. Information on the organization's goals and purpose can, however, be found here.
